I had a furnace problem a few years back. Mice ate the furnace insulation, it caved in, the resulting pocket of heat fused the burners, utility guy came to take a look and hung a "condemned sign on it" - at the end of December. I turned it back on after he left, out of desperation, but bought a carbon monoxide alarm on the advice of a friend. That alarm saved our bacon when it went off a few days later at 3 a.m. </p><br /><br /><p>The moral: Don't mess with bad furnaces, and no matter how expensive the damn things are, please invest in a carbon monoxide alarm.
