Someone stole my copy of Top Gun.
Okay, someone stole my copy of Top Gun like, three years ago. But last night when I woke up in a cold sweat over a nightmare (about, of all things, the Chinatown Bus), I dug through my DVD collection for a bit of digital coddling, and there it wasn’t. And I wanted it.
I wanted Mav to suggest doing it right there on the bathroom counter. I wanted to shake my head at what’s-her-face’s inappropriate use of cowboy boots. I wanted to get all weepy when Goose doesn’t survive that dogfight.
But mostly, I wanted to watch the volleyball scene. Over and over.
Seriously, Rick Rossovich? I’d have chosen a big-nosed Steve Martin over you in Roxanne any day of the week, but that flexing thing you do in the volleyball scene? That is what instant replay was made for. Hommina.
Shhh, don’t talk, it’s better that way.
In the absence of the cheap thrills option, I put on Much Ado About Nothing, gathered up my sleepy kitten and climbed onto the couch to watch a sharp-tongued Kenneth Branagh get tricked into matrimony – for the gazillionth time.
I’m really going nowhere with this. You know, in case you were expecting some sort of story arc or conclusion or something. I feel sorta bad, writing drivel like this… not wrapping it up all neat n’ tidy. But, after all, this is just a blog and sometimes, I don’t really have much to say except, I want my copy of Top Gun back, god damn it.
Did I ever tell you about how a TON of my movies were stolen my freshman year of college? (And not prank-stolen, like my roommates did with my TV. Actually stolen.) I was so pissed, as you can probably imagine. The one I was most upset about losing was The Lion King, because Disney has such limited releases. But I finally redeemed the loss when it came out on DVD a few months ago.
Posted by: Big City Gal Pal at July 1, 2004 10:54 AMi know what you feel like. i thought i lost one of my favorite movies ("beaches" with bette midler) during my senior year of college. i assumed someone borrowed it freshman year and never gave it back. god, i hate when people do that! anyway, so senior year, i was complaining about how i wanted to watch "beaches" and i didn't have it and one of my roommates (who i didn't really get to know until junior year) was like, "oh, it's downstairs. i borrowed it from you freshman year and never gave it back." there should be, like, an unwritten rule about borrowing stuff. i'm convinced. anyway, i hope you find "top gun" and, if you still can't find it in a week, ask your friends.
Posted by: shannon at July 1, 2004 11:01 AMThe volleyball scene on the beach? But, Fish, those men don't have very much on. They're all kind of ... half naked.
"Don't talk, it's better that way." !?!
You weren't fantasizing about ... uh ... hmm ... oh, never mind.
Kelly McGillis is quite the thing, too, and a pretty decent actress. I saw her on stage in "Much Ado" in D.C., and she was terrific. It was several years ago BC (before children).
Anyway, "Top Gun" is available on DVD fairly cheap at Amazon or B&N.com.
Posted by: Michael at July 1, 2004 11:48 AMBefore HER children. She did the mommy thing for a while.
Posted by: Michael at July 1, 2004 11:48 AMI've never seen Top Gun. Yeah, I know. What kind of world is this when an average nineteen year old has never seen Top Gun. I've heard it. I just don't have any friends to borrow it from (and maybe return it to).
Posted by: keol at July 1, 2004 12:07 PMI always pop that in when I stumble home drunk and sad (not all that often, but it's happened, you know?).
So I did that last Friday, and when I was out on Sunday, I mentioned it. A girl I'd just met wrinkled up her nose when I said "Top Gun." Alright, I know this was uber-hipster city, where we were drinking, but come on.
Not drinking with that one again, no siree.
Posted by: Anne at July 1, 2004 12:24 PMOooh, my favorite scene too. A guy I went to High School with, and our families used to go camping together, was one of the beach volleyball coaches for that scene. He shows up barely in the sidelines once or twice wearing a grey T-shirt. And he's yummy too, or at least he was at that age.
Posted by: Jules at July 1, 2004 12:36 PMI just saw Much Ado the other day for the first time. I love Emma Thompson.
Posted by: Jen at July 1, 2004 01:21 PMOOOOOOOOOOO so yummy. Seriously. Drooling at the remembrance of that scene. There's nothing hotter than glistening boys on the beach being all sporty and filled with testosterone.... I need to go buy that movie.
Posted by: Caroline at July 1, 2004 01:37 PMI had a case of the screaming thigh sweats for YEARS over Val Kilmer after that scene from that movie. OMG! YUM!
Posted by: Shawn at July 1, 2004 02:56 PMThat Volleyball scene is a crowning achievement in Val Kilmer's career as well.
you said it best yourself "hommina"
Posted by: akaellen at July 1, 2004 03:01 PMNo, no, STRENUOUSLY no.
The kiss. In the tunnel. Near the end of "The Saint."
THAT was Val Kilmer's crowning achievment. I swear, if a man ever kisses me like that, he had better be prepared to drop RIGHT THERE and finish the job.
Posted by: Fish at July 1, 2004 03:33 PM"...glistening boys on the beach ... all sporty and filled with testosterone ... "
Caroline, I'm shocked! If there is one thing I know for certain, men hate to be mistaken for sex objects by hoards of swarming beach girls. We feel so cheap and sordid because we realize that women cannot respect us if we let them maul us at every opportunity.
Posted by: Michael at July 1, 2004 03:49 PMI think Fish deserves a new copy of Top Gun. If we all pitched in a few cents ... I'm sure we could get it for her.
DVD or VHS is the question.
And you're all wrong.
REAL GENIUS .. is Val Kilmer's crowning cinematic achievement!
Posted by: David Utah at July 1, 2004 04:25 PMDavid, I'm in for $1. I'd hate for Fish to lost without her fantasies! :>)
Posted by: Michael at July 1, 2004 04:36 PMIf you put a $1 in, I'm good for a $1.
Come on people ... for the price of a small fraction of a cup of Starbucks coffee .. you too can help Fish reach her dreams (fantasies ... dreams ... whatever).
Posted by: David Utah at July 1, 2004 05:14 PMmmmmm..... Val Kilmer....mmmmm
Posted by: Daniella at July 1, 2004 06:16 PMI love Much Ado About Nothing... from the field trip we took in high school to see, till today. I even bought the sound track
Nothing like Denzel in tight leather pants... or a smarmy Keanu...
Posted by: Emily at July 1, 2004 07:56 PM"Goose! Ya Big Stud! Take me to bed or lose me forever!"
"Show me the way home honey!"
Ugh god... just... wow... best 80's movie.
I just watched that the other day myself on my good old VHS. That is still one of my favorite love scenes of all time.
Why isn't my bedroom filled with fabulous blue light and billowing curtains?
Good choice Fish.
BTW: "...don't talk it's better that way." I can't tell you how many times that rule has come in handy.
Posted by: Rebecca at July 1, 2004 09:22 PMYou convinced me. I'm going to go watch Top Gun now.
Posted by: Erika at July 1, 2004 10:07 PMFish, you can be my wing-woman anytime. God, now I totally need to see that movie again.
I just recently watched Much Ado for the first time, and I have to say, Keanu Reeves is as his best (as a bad actor). He's so terrible, you just can't believe it.
Posted by: Bob at July 2, 2004 12:10 AMMy friends and I all have an unhealthy obsession with Top Gun. Seriously, its like religion. For example:
- One year, we had dog tags made with individual Top Gun call signs on them, and spent an entire three month period referring to one another by call sign only. One of my friends is still in my cellphone address book under "Viper"..
- Whenever we do anything competitive, even when playing team Trivial Pursuit, we celebrate any points scored with the volleyball scene "high-five-low-five".. anyone who has seen it more than say, twice, will know exactly what i'm talking about..
- Whenever we're looking for parking, and drive past the evening's destination (bar, club, restaurant, whatever..), we refer to it as "buzzing the tower"..
- We've actually done the "You've lost that loving feeling" routine more times than i care to mention.. about half the time we crashed and burned..
I could go on, but you get the idea.
So Fish, staying with the 80's classic movie theme, if you can tell me which movie contains a VW Beetle, two tractors, one pair of red boots and a bizarre reference to Slaughterhouse 5..
.. then you can take ME now (or, you know, lose me forever.. ;)
This is probably a travesty, but I've never seen Top Gun either and I grew up in the eighties. I happpened to have the fortune (not sure whether good or bad) to see Hot Shots first, and it was so damn funny that I didn't think anything else could compare.
Posted by: Jenny at July 2, 2004 08:32 AMI'm with David Utah. Real Genius is what it says.
"Was it a dream where you were where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid, with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?"
"No."
"Why, am I the only one who has that dream?"
That's what I'm talking about!!
Thanks for the nod there on REAL GENIUS.
So, how are we doing on our TOP GUN fund for Fishy?
I think we really only have $2 ... which just won't cut it. Well ... maybe a bootleg copy, but I think that might not have the DVD extras.
Posted by: David Utah at July 2, 2004 09:03 AMBut really, no girl should be without her Top-Gun. It's like running around without chapstick. Dont always need it, but when you dont have it - it might just drive you mad.
Posted by: R at July 2, 2004 10:31 AMOMG the beach scene was a right of passage at my ripe old age of 14. Back then we had to go to the movies in order to watch it over and over. thank god for dvd.
Posted by: italianfrog at July 2, 2004 10:58 AM1. Charl, were you watching VH1 last night? Saw that one.
2. Real Genius is the best Val Kilmer movie ever.
2a. "Lazlo" from Real Genius is the uncle in Napoleon Dynamite, in case you couldn't figure out where you knew that guy from. At least, I'm pretty sure he is. I haven't done the IMDB check yet.
oh, real genius! mmmmm....
'i was thinking of the immortal words of socrates, when he said 'i ate what?''
the love i have for that movie cannot be explained.
Posted by: shivery at July 2, 2004 11:10 AMThis Gossip is tapped right now. Pass the hat around Bryant Park this afternoon. (Lve the grill there.)
Posted by: Michael at July 2, 2004 11:33 AMI love the Volleyball scene too... Not so much for Tom though... I love Val... and as soon as we meet he will love me. and we will live happily ever after... as soon as I get rid of my husband.
Posted by: cher at July 2, 2004 11:49 AM"She's lost that lovin' feeling."
"I hate it when she does that."
Great flick.
"What were you doing?"
"Communicating."
Posted by: GrumpyBunny at July 2, 2004 11:52 AMYou have absolutely exquisite taste in movies.
Posted by: Kat at July 2, 2004 10:47 PMOk, those of you who want to drop in a dollar contact me and we can figure out how to get you some mon-nay.
I'm in for a buck or 2, but unfortunately loverly fish-er-oo, can't go above that due to being a sugar mamma and all.
But yeah, you toally need Top Gun.
Posted by: angie at July 3, 2004 12:29 AMSomething cool? When I was a young hot chippy on the prowl, I lived in Pensacola FL and the hip bachelor place in town, with all the military aviation students living there, had a sand filled volleyball court. Now, they were NOT Tom & Val. But there were some pretty sexy guys there. And every single weekend they played hot sweaty volleyball in the sandy sun. So. I can understand, imagine it when you could potentially actually take one of those sweaty guys home with you. :) (I never did, though... much to my disappointment in my chippy self).
