methods of distraction

My job can be pretty mundane.

Crazy talk, I know. But sometimes, being a corporate monkey can be really, really ridiculously dull. How I manage to stay extremely busy and simultaneously bored beyond all reason is one of the many intriguing secrets of corporate monkeyhood and is best left unexplored.

To keep my brain alive (as well as sharpen my already keen multitasking skills), I have found loads of pleasant ways to distract myself from the monotony of my copy-paste, shuffle-step-ball-change routine.

For instance, obsessively checking the FedEx tracking site for the location of my eagerly awaited iPod. My heart gave a little flutter when, just now, I read: On FedEx vehicle for delivery. After Shanghai (am I the only one who thought these things came from California?), Anchorage, Memphis and finally an unbearable seven minutes just sitting “at local FedEx facility,” it’s so close I can almost hear it!

Imagine how tired you are of hearing about the iPod of dreams; waiting for it is even more obnoxious!

So now that it’s on a truck and there’s nothing left to do (short of running out to the street in search of that FedEx vehicle), I’m back to my previously instituted methods of distraction: reading blogs, emailing the PWSWM and planning Sarah B’s future wedding. I get to be the flower girl. And wear moon boots. To date, no groom has been selected, but we’re all squared away on the color scheme. Come to think of it, there may not be many more details to iron out. You know, besides the groom thing.

I am so going to kiss the FedEx guy when he gets here.

Don't forget our WorldWide Takeover!!!

I know your feeling. I order the dell juxbox yesterday. It's coming from Texas, I think. I know the IPOD is the digital music player de jour, but I have animosity for Apple. So I am going down the WMA road, as opposed to itunes.

moon boots. awesome.

So I'm not the only one who passes the time at work planning weddings for friends who don't have grooms yet. Good to know.

I'm sure that after that greeting, the FedEx guy would be happy to be your date to the wedding.

Moon boots, a pink iPod, and going out with a Guy-in-Uniform...

I feel a trend being set :D

start putting your cds onto your computer so that when your ipod comes, you can be ready to go!

(also a good way to kill time)

FedEx drivers all over your city are desperately hoping they are the lucky one to deliver your iPod... :)

Nice to know I'm not the only person in the world who will obsess over a FedEx tracking site. And it doesn't even have to be an iPod that I'm waiting for.

That reminds me...I need to check on an order...

"Step Ball Change" is a wonderful lighthearted romance novel, if you're ever in the mood. It's sweet.

Your mentioning of dull made me think of something I've been thinking about recently. In life there can be no ups without the downs, yet we all wish there were no downs. But are there "downs" that we can live with and might even enjoy? Like a hard work out that hurts but you are happy about? A frustrating project that won't come out right but which you know will be excellent in the end? What is the grueling hard work that you like to do because in the end it becomes its own reward?

Sorry for the long comment.

P.S. You should post a photo of you kissing the FedEx guy. :)

P.P.S. Do you ever worry about being "dooced"?

Have your friend Sarah do it without the groom--who needs one nowadays, anyway?

I don't know why I'm so excited about YOUR damn IPOD. But I am. I love my MP3 player; digital music (Musik?) is fabulous. 1GB's worth of tunes on one tiny little memory stick. Javol!!

If you want to play the iPod in the 'partment, may I suggest the iPAL from Tivoli Audio? I got one for Christmas and the sound is incredible for being such a small unit.

Ever since you brought up the whole iPod thing I began noticing how many of my co-workers have one of these little wonders. They sit jamming and typing out stuff at their desk. I feel so alone. An iPod and ramon noodles for a month come calling.

Just found your site today...very nice! I am inspired by your quote for a tagline. I am addicted to quotes. I guess because usually they make a lot of sense otherwise why would anybody quote them!? :)

You sound like me. I ordered my ipod last Wednesday and I tracked it all the way from China--where there was a weather delay and a hold at customs--to Alaska, then Memphis, and then to where I am!

And I have to admit, I thought the thing was made in California too. I was so surprised that it was coming from Shanghai!

Posted by: Angela at January 25, 2005 05:50 PM

My new PowerBook just left Shanghai via UPS this morning and I ordered it a WEEK ago. I know your pain all too well.

The ipod is a wonderful thing. Everyone should have one. Except for the guy who was blasting "Parents Just Don't Understand" in the elevator yesterday. He should be shot.

If you're not putting the application back up, and your friend Sarah needs a groom, tell her I volunteer, having read one of her posts and seen the picture of her with a flask strapped to her leg. [Paris Hilton voice]: That is hot.

Fark.com is always good for at least two hours of "work."

Guy blasting "Parents Just Don't Understand" in elevator
LOL!
What was he blasting it from: please, please say it was a Radio Raheem-type boom box. Please....

You know what's sad. I went down in the morning and waited at FedEx. Ya, I'm that lame.

It's worth it, I haven't been more then 10 feet from mine since I got it.

Sounds like me last month ("you mean my iPod actually comes from China?!??!") I was amazed how fast it got from there to Alaska, to Chicago, to me!

Have fun!

"Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China."

Boredom cure: Books on mp3. Audible DOT com for instance. Look into it.

I would DIE without my Ipod! It will change your life! I know what it is like to track a FedEx package. I've been known to tackle my UPS guy all the way down the street if I am expecting a package! (Which is kind of scary, I guess, for the poor delivery guy since I live in NYC!) Good luck and have fun!

Posted by: Last Girl On Earth at January 26, 2005 02:05 PM

I thought the Pod hailed from CA, too. Shanghai?? I can't decide if it was cooler to get a package from China or more tedious to wait for it!
