Yesterday, I went back to the gym.
I hadn’t ventured into the treadmill jungle since I moved to New York, but seeing as I was paying a monthly fee anyway (‘donating to the gym’ as Stephanie calls it), I figured why not? I should go check on my investment.
As much as I like yoga and prefer it to say, the mortifying gracelessness that is me on an elliptical machine, I do it more to keep myself from going crazy than to keep from getting fat. And fat, it appears, I am getting. I’m starting to see curves where no curve rightly belongs. Like in my bra. No, seriously. I’m not a busty gal by any stretch of the imagination, and so when it suddenly appears that my cup runneth over, it’s high time to stop considering my walk to the subway as exercise. Such was the case yesterday morning. I spotted an uncharacteristic amount of boob and went back to the gym.
Actually, I went back to the gym, saw that it was too crowded, went back home and watched Annie Hall while eating a big bowl of Frosted Flakes.
So I lack resolve. This is nothing new. But what is new is that I’ve learned there is absolutely no sense in beating yourself up about such things. It just makes you too sore to work out should you actually ever choose to stay at the gym.
Baby steps, my friends. Baby steps.
I've been nurturing my on again/off again relationship with the gym since September --- baby steps is absolutely spot on!
(and Yoga rocks!)
Posted by: akaellen at February 8, 2005 12:00 PMwhen I lived in NYC I walked the 2 miles to work and the lbs started falling off immediately. It's a great time to get a lot of thinking done too.
Give it a whirl when the weather gets nicer.
Posted by: PLD at February 8, 2005 12:02 PMIt's just weatherproofing against the harsh new england winter.
Posted by: Mathieu at February 8, 2005 12:08 PMWe totally have the same fat test, it's with mixed feelings that I suddenly realize my chest has grown beyond normal proportions. (Yay...oh no, an extra waist...boo)
Yay...I love salads.
yoga is honestly the best form of exercise anyway -- doesn't hurt your joints, and practicing different types will give you a cardiovascular workout as well (which i'm sure you know)
btw - that was not meant to be any form of advice but more a plug for yoga as a practice :)
Posted by: S at February 8, 2005 12:30 PMi'm a firm believer in the curative powers of "annie hall." well, maybe minus the firm. i need to baby step my way back to an exercise regimen.
Posted by: sassylittlepunkin at February 8, 2005 12:37 PMThis Fish needs a recumbent bike?
Posted by: derek at February 8, 2005 12:41 PMThe walk to the subway argument only really works if you live over on ave D, far from the L. On the other hand, I understand frosted flakes.
Posted by: peter at February 8, 2005 01:50 PMI have found that my boobs are growing frighteningly enormous, too. And I'm a man.
You could always run stairs in your building. Maybe that's why they keep fucking up the elevator.
Not that I would advise running stairs. I find it boring as hell (whereas the elliptical machine is excellent!).
Since I started having my gym payment automatically debited from my bank account, I don't even know how much I still owe them not to go there.
Posted by: Michael R at February 8, 2005 01:53 PMLet me get this straight...you're UPSET that your boobs are growing. Oh to have that problem...
Posted by: Amy at February 8, 2005 03:40 PMIf JUST the boobs grew, that'd be awesome. But it usually indicates that my ass has also expanded.
Posted by: Fish at February 8, 2005 03:46 PMi walk 2 blocks from my parking space to work each day, and i consider that my workout. :) i also 'donate to the gym.' have for a few years now. hehehe
Posted by: red at February 8, 2005 03:58 PMSo I found out today that the #1 deterent to fitness in our age group are the Hershey's Kisses w/ caramel inside. I think I had 1,000 today. What they don't tell you, is that they are also made with crack. No amount of evidence to the contrary will make me believe otherwise.
Posted by: Mike at February 8, 2005 05:34 PMhave you ever tried bikram yoga? its an experience unlike any other. 120 degrees. 90 minutes. its intense to say the leaat but it is really empowering.

Posted by: Patricia Danielle at February 8, 2005 08:01 PMI've noticed myself having a similar problem- bigger boobs AND a bigger butt. Today marked the first day of my diet. I'm crossing my fingers that I can keep the boobs and lose the butt. Good luck!
Posted by: Amber at February 9, 2005 01:27 AMI like to watch FitTV, myself, as opposed to going to the gym. Something about watching OTHER people working out/sweating makes me feel like I too did something. I am always a sucker for "Ultimate Goals."
Posted by: Molly at February 9, 2005 09:53 AMAnnie Hall has aged a little on the rough side, don't you think? I was just watching it a couple of weeks ago. Looking forward to Manhattan soon, always my favorite of his. I'm hoping it proves more timeless, and I think it will.
My stubborn streak comes in handy at the gym; I'm coming up on two months of fair regular attendance (after a tubby year away, oops), and my trick is reducing it to getting out of the house. Once I'm out of the house there is no way I'm going back without getting my stuff done, I don't care how cold or crowded it might be. Or even if there's a Palmetto bug in the sauna, which happened last week.
Posted by: Linus at February 9, 2005 12:03 PMWait, if your boobs are getting bigger, it means you butt is as well? Round here that's known as "jumping to conclusions." And I hear it's a really ineffective form of cardio ;)
Posted by: Dani at February 9, 2005 06:40 PMYes, I had to go out and by new bras for the excess boobs. The thing is, I do have cleavage now and I can hold up whole sets of pencils. The rest is round and bouncy, not quite what I had hoped for at this age, but I guess I've got me some love handles.
