taking a break. sort of.

Last night, with Laura’s Tivo acting as a safety net, I took a break from my Olympic binge and actually spent an evening outside of my apartment. When I say I took a break, I mean, when we arrived at the restaurant for dinner, I asked to be seated at a table near the bar, so I could keep an eye on the synchronized platform finals. Because I am weak. And I am addicted. Fortunately, my dinner partner is either just as gravely in need of an intervention or a truly gifted enabler, because not only put up with my constant TV glancing, he had a hefty supply of Michael Phelps trivia.  Oh, the depth of emotion I have experienced over swim cap layering!

When this is all over, I suspect that I’m going to feel very empty and sad. Maybe I will start caring about Heroes. Or Mad Men. Or, you know, humanity. But more than likely I will simply start watching my Little House on the Prairie DVDs all over again.

In a feat of remarkable self control, I did manage to separate myself from Olympic coverage completely last night for the couple hours it took to see Pineapple Express. Hysterical, I tell you. Worth missing the women’s gymnastics final? Well, like I said, I had Laura’s Tivo. Otherwise, crazy talk.

So, I know things have been slow around here, and so I’m going to open it up to requests. Wanna hear about something particular? Leave a comment! I warn you now that requests involving the words “intern” or “musician”  will be blatantly ignored.  Proceed!

so, I love your blog, read it all the time! You are witty and intelligent, you give girls a good name. As opposed to “love a bad name” ;)

So, since you are looking for topic suggestions, how about clearing up the whole “cougar” thing. Can you tell us at which point in a woman’s life she has to deal with that label? And what it really means to define cougardome?

I’m curious about this doctor who fixed your eye and asked for your phone number. That’s more of a statement than a question so I guess the question is… what’s going on there?

  • Nat

Correction – gave you his HOME phone number. I dated a doctor and I can tell you, they don’t like to do that…

  • Anonymous

Oh, darlingest, there is no story there. He gave me HIS phone number, so that if the pain got worse over the weekend, he could do something about it for me.

  • Jessica

I’m glad I missed the Women’s finals. I’m pretty sure that I would have cried when a couple of the girls fell. :(

As for requests…How is the preggers sister?

  • How is your new job going? If money (and the potential need for more years of school) were irrelevant, would you change careers? If yes, what are you interested in?

  • Maggie

I hear ya sister! Who knew the world keeps rotating while the Olympics are going on. I almost had a panic attack when I lost my remote last night and couldn’t fast forward through the commercials.

And I thought DVR would keep me from watching MORE tv. Thank you Michael Phelps for keeping me from public.

  • Fargo

I having been waiting for your facebook post…..

can you pick a (couple? few?) scene(s) from a LHOTP episode that you love the most? i watch an episode from my DVDs almost every evening, and one of my favs is when charles says to caroline, utterly enraged, “did they put their hands on you?!?!” gives me goosebumps. i also adore the pilot and the first DVD, Season 1.

  • RD

also, did you know about this?? i didn’t either until late last night. melissa gilbert plays “ma.” i’m definitely going…somehow.

  • Barbara E.

By careful deduction, I have figured out that you were on a date last night! A dinner/movie date! Care to share? If not (or even if you do), howsabout some pix of Sir Hal?

  • plainjane

can you believe that my precious little puppy had the nerve to have to go outside to go tinkle AT THE VERY MOMENT that michael phelps was about to start his race? the nerve! thank goodness for tivo!!

No, not a date. I was out with a work friend. It was meant to be a much bigger affair involving interns, but they had to pack. So it ended up just being the two of us. Very not date-ish.

  • Who’s hotter: Mark Spitz or Michael Phelps?

  • red

have you read “little stalker” by jennifer belle? i just finished it and she has a mild obsession with LHOTP….

  • Nicole

Hi there. Well, yours is the first blog I ever read (two years ago) and of course, I started from the beginning. I was just wondering do you still talk to J at all?

  • Laurel

Hey Fish! After turning 26 the same day you celebrated your last milestone, I’ve noticed that I feel…old. Like joints cracking, back aching old. Have you noticed a rapid increase in aging throughout your twenties and into your thirties? Discussions I’ve had with friends have been quite fascinating and…horrifying. :)

  • CaliGal

Last night’s games (or yesterday depending on where you are in the world) were amazing! So proud of our Mr. Phelps! GO USA!!!

Definitely watch MAD MEN… I think you’ll love it!

How is Sir Hal? :) I just love cats! Wish I could have one but at the moment it’s not possible. :(

  • Charliegirl

Whatever happened to the airplane-neighbor guy? Did I miss that? Alas, living vicariously through others at the mo’. And will also experience a similar let-down after the Olympics are over. So exciting!

  • J

for the record – you mentioned interns first. just saying…

  • lifeonthetailofacomet

2 things-1) I’ll watch Little house on the prairie with you any time- I’ve seen them all many times.

    2) You look awesome in a hat and i have to hook you up with an artist named Kathryn Page. I’ll post a picture of one of her hats 4 you.

  • Given your ability to make anything interesting, even if it wasn’t “eventful” by most standards, I’d like to know about your Senior Prom. Everyone remembers prom differently, and your thoughts on the subject intrigue me.

Barring that, can we PLEASE find out if there’s a part four to “three in three parts”???

  • Updates needed: your shoe collection… inquiring minds want to know about your summer footwear. And besides Michael Phelps do you adore any other swimmers or male gymnasts (however short those guys are!).

  • Bob

Is the J who commented above “that” J?

  • As a fellow Olympiphile, do you find so much of the commentary absolutely horrid?

Someone calls a synchro divers splash a “tidal wave” (!), we get a “hug count” on the volleyball court, and a sordid background of who is dating whom on the French/Italian swim teams. But why is the beach volleyball soundtrack all American classic rock? And how do horses and rowing skulls get shipped to Beijing? And can we meet the chefs in the Olympic Village?

    Thoughts?

  • Jenna

Pet Peeves! I have a few, but you put them so much more eloquently…

  • Back in July, you said the very act of being awake was an effort. I think it was here http://thisfish.ivillage.com/love/archives/2008/07/doubles.html

    What was up with that??

  • I think most women in America are crushing on Michael Phelps. Sigh. Ever wonder if the butterfly improves other nocturnal moves? ;-)

Just kidding. Sort of. I second Mrs. Greg House in her question.

  • How on earth do those synchronized divers DO that? I didn’t even know it was an event til yesterday, and then I continued to watch, enthralled, at two people spinning fast enough to make my head….well….spin, at the same time. *sigh* Wish I could do that.

No questions. I love reading whatever you choose to write about.

  • I hear you. I love Michael Phelps. And his ears. And his mom.

  • Michael

I can’t remember – are you in DFW? I know there are lakes around Dallas and I wondered about them – what are the like, are they nice, would you recommend swimming them? For some reason I picture all of Texas as one big desert. Have you had a lot of lake experience (for comparison)? I grew up in PA and vacationed in MA and have been to lakes in both. The lake in MA was better but it also was miles bigger and deeper.

Have you been to (larger) national parks there and what is a topographical or geographical (for the land, not the civilization) area of TX you really like?

  • I am totally addicted to the Olympics as well. I know I’m going to be so sad when they’re over, like a part of my soul is gone! Ha. So sad.

  • Don

How ’bout an interpretation of ‘Freebird’. You haven’t spoken a word of Karaoke in awhile. Something out of your divinity background would be interesting. BTW ment Rosie Perez walking her dogs in the park. Now that she’s got a boyfriend she doesn’t talk to other guys anymore. Boo hoo. On Letterman she called the actor Seth ‘Rogain’. Letterman corrected her pronunciation, saying “that’s for baldness treatment”. I installed a 52″ Plasma TV for a customer that was addicted to Olympics and needed a tech for DVR recording. The first event that was on was Women’s volleyball. I had no idea that was an event. Nothing but taught bikini clad Mia Hamm and other women hitting the ball to each other over the net on big screen and on the ‘sand’ in Beijing. Only thing missing was imported sea water. I like synchronized swimming, diving, running, gym bars and basketball. Last comic standing should be an Olympic event.
