So, I cried at the Oscars. More than once.
I cried for Miley Cyrus who clearly has developed some sort of terrifying ocular disease that causes her to mistake large, sparkly fish scales for red carpet finery, and also for Jessica Biel who had absolutely no time to practice her teleprompter reading skills because that last Hooked On Phonics lesson ran way too long. I also cried for the glorious mess that was Sophia Loren’s crazy ass Dynasty get up, but in a worshipy type way. But mostly, I shed genuine tears because I was just so moved by the presenters. If Shirley MacLaine told me she expected great things out of me, I’d totally forget all about that scummy Italian boyfriend I’ve been pretending to forget about this whole time and cry and blow kisses, because who cares if Shirley is totally nuts, she’s also totally awesome and can even make Cameron Diaz look like she has legitimate acting skills. And that ain’t easy.
But hoo-boy, when Kate Winslet finally won, I actually had to take a moment and pull myself together. When a lady who embraces her stretchmarks wins, we all win, ladies.
I love Kate. More than is normal for a heterosexual woman.
And when Heath Ledger won? I bawled like a baby. And when they showed Paul Newman. Oh hell, I don’t think I stopped crying all night.
Thankfully I missed the red carpet. Somebody up there must like me.
Keen observations, it’s almost as if you were right there with my girlfriends for our Oscar party. Great minds . . . (Oh, and I didn’t get in on it last time–I’m another of your DC admirers.)
I cried too, Fish.
I’m incredibly happy for Kate! A truly amazing performance! Brava!
I enjoyed the show overall… even though the show and it’s pre-show preparations have a tendency to create some havoc for those of us that live within the vicinity of the theater.
While I didn’t watch the show – I loved watching the highlights this morning online. And those dresses – Marisa Tomei and Kate Winslet looked fabulous!
How do they do it? When the show started I was sitting on the couch, arm folded, daring Hugh to entertain me and not having high hopes. 3 hours later I’m surrounded by damp tissues and trying to breathe without taking those 2 extra sucks of air.
I cried for Jennifer Aniston’s awkward smile and head nod towards Brangelina during her presentation with Jack Black. It was so uncomfortable that I cried for her.
I let out some tears (along with many actors in the room who actually, well, knew him) when Heath Ledger won. I loved The Dark Knight, but I was crying for 10 Things I Hate About You Heath. The Patriot Heath. *Sighs*
…But yes, the dresses were gorgeous and I
I cried too. Multiple times. When she told her dad to whistle and not a split second later you heard him- tears. I’m proud of my son when he break dances through the living room- I can’t imagine his elation. SHE DID IT!!
But yes, a great night of tv, one of the firsts I cared to watch.(oscar wise)
I’m glad to hear that I wasn’t the only one in tears watching the Oscars last night. I was so moved by the presenters’ and winners’ speeches that I had to ice my eyes afterwards, so I’d look half-decent today. (BTW, love your blog!)
Yeah, I wept freely when Heath Ledger’s family did the acceptance speech. I was quite pleased with Kate Winslet’s win as well, and pleased that Sean Penn actually was self-deprecating. It was all better than I expected.
Haha! I love Shirley MacLaine to the point of freakishness!!
I told a friend of mine last night that when I’m that age, I want to have Helen Mirren’s classy-sexy style and Shirley MacLaine’s “I Don’t Give A F*ck!” attitude.
I cried a little for most of the same reasons…. but laughed at poor Miley Cyrus on the red carpet because there’s just no way she’s going to be back there winning for Hannah Montana next year!
I tried to read this posting today at work and our firewall blocked your site. Reason: “pornography”! Even MySpace only merits “adult content”. At first I thought it was pretty funny, but then I imagined the IT department reviewing the firewall logs and me getting fired for trying to look at pornography at work… They’d never believe my explanation!
Miley Cyrus’s dress is a copy of a 1949 Dior gown that is in the Met Museum. And like most copies, it is less than perfect.
Right on sister! The movemen is still an under-current, but it is there.
I am so very tired of hearing a woman’s worth described initially and sometimes only by how hot or fat a man thinks she is.
I have been a huge Hugh Jackman fan ever since I knew of his performing on the London stage in musicals such as Oklahoma (he does a fantastic Curly!) So I was really excited to see him do so great with the Oscars.
On a related note, did anyone watch Jon Stewart yesterday? He was hysterically funny comparing himself with Hugh Jackman as host of the Oscars!!!
I was very happy, and touched, by Kate Winslet’s win. She is such a normal woman, and it’s about damn time! I also adored her reaching out to her dad from the podium, and love the way she has managed her life and career.
However, I also love the glamour and glitz and clothes! I don’t know why nobody has commented on Eddie Murphy, but I thought he was the best dressed man at the Oscars. Very very classy and yet cool. It would be hard to beat Angelina for class (although nobody has beat Julia Roberts since the year she won, imho). Penelope Cruz loved lovely and I liked her speech (and the fact that part of it was in Spanish!) Lots of lovely dresses, and some serious failures too, lol.
I’m afraid that Indian music is still a genre that I am so unfamiliar with that I didn’t much care for it. That’s just my lack of exposure, I know. Nice choreography tho.
