“…Carrie finally marries Mr. Big, the man of her shallow, self-obsessed dreams. It has now been two years since their nuptials. Carrie already hates it. She hates that he sits on the couch. She hates that he eatsnoodles out of a take-out box. She hates that he wants to spend quality time with her in their incredibly expensive and gaudy apartment. She hates that he bought her an enormous television. When Big suggests that they spend a couple of days a week in separate apartments (they own TWO apartments, because life is hard!), Carrie screeches, “Is this because I’m a bitch wife who nags you?” Congratulations. You have answered your own question.”
Holy cow, this SATC review may be the best thing I’ve ever read (via Sarah Brown).
Ha ha! Sometimes I feel that I am the only female alive who can’t stand Sex and the City.
I’m with Rebecca on Sex & the City. Can’t stand it! LOVED that movie review.
Hee! Great review!!!!
LMAO! Well said.
Oh, trust me Rebecca, you’re not! My family (all girls) loves it and I watched one episode and wanted to smack someone upside the head. If that’s seriously how the majority of women see themselves (and worse, not see anything wrong with it) then we’re doomed.
Alright, everyone can absolutely have their own opinion and I welcome everyones… but I can say that I am a fan of SATC. It is just a moment to escape life and live in someones else’s life – however unrealistic it may be. It also gives us girls a chance to do something with our girlfriends, share laughs and just be immune to outside distracts. I liked the movie and hope that everyone has some sort of show or book club that they can experience some of the things I have with 6 seasons and 2 movies of SATC. xoxo
I read this review yesterday and thought it was hilarious. I’ll probably still watch it but I won’t stop thinking about this!
I Love SATC! Ha ha – but I also do not take it seriously by any means and am 100% convinced that the new movie is going to be ridiculous. But normal people don’t watch TV for the reality, do they? They watch it for the escape. Those girls live the fantasy NYC life. If anyone ate at those fab restaurants all the time, drank like they did and slept around as much those girls, they would be fat, broke, and probably have some nasty disease like HIV or genital warts. Girls can have their escape too. Guys get Batman, Spiderman, Superman, Iron Man, you name it, so why can’t we have a movie about the super heroes of Manolo? Better that than actually going out and spending good money on a pair that I will inevitably step into a pile of NYC dog poop in my very real world
As a feminist and woman, I don’t think that review was funny. I have yet to see the movie so I can’t speak from that aspect. But something about it just angers me. Clearly the writer is going for comedy, but just as she argues that the movie does nothing to progress women in today’s society, she has done nothing to help us either. Her hatred is clear and vile; while I get that she’s going for comedy here, but I can’t stand behind her because she demeans women just as much as this movie seems to. I got a lot more from the comments below the review than I did the actual review. If she represents a new brand of feminism, then I’m out because I don’t want to be seen as a bitter, sarcastic, degrading woman.
Ugh, thank you! Every other chick I know LOVES Sex and the City, and I can’t stand it! Good to know I’m not alone.
It’s fashionable to dislike SATC, but I like it all the same.
I’m not a big fan of SATC but I’m kinda intrigued now about the movie because I was born in Abu Dhabi and currently live in Dubai. I want to see it to see just how wrong it is. Just that description of a scene in a spice bazaar? There’s no such thing here. We don’t have spice bazaars. We don’t even have bazaars, maybe in Morocco? Speaking as an “opressed veiled Muslim woman” (who is a very big ThisFish fan btw)SATC seems to me to be morbidly indulgent. My two cents.
@Krissy
Most movie reviewers for publications such as The Stranger have something nasty and snarky to say about every movie. Obviously, if you don’t think it’s funny that’s your perogative, but I don’t think Lindy West is trying to represent a new brand of feminism. I think she just really doesn’t like the SATC characters, which I can understand.
The movie is ridiculous and comical and shocking (well, at least for me. Keep in mind I have also seen 7th Heaven- The Entire Series). I in no way take SATC seriously- it is purely for entertainment. I saw it yesterday on my first day of vacation at the beach while waiting for check-in at the hotel and I enjoyed it. I actually like Big just a little bit now which is a first. The only moral I take from their story is “all of us girls need girl friends!” Am I supposed to find deep meaning in “The Bachelorette”?!?
Read that in the Stranger also, & thought it was awesome
Feminism! F* Yeah!
