this is your brain on serial killers

Just a handful of years ago, a long weekend would have meant maximum cocktail time, hangovers and a cab driver counting my fare for me. Now I’m old, I guess, because a successful long weekend means maximum couch time — this one spent watching the entirety of Season One of Dexter with the Boy and demolishing an entire half gallon of Blue Bell vanilla ice cream.

Sure, my engagement ring doesn’t fit after the Great Memorial Binge of 2010, but I won’t let that put a damper on things. Food + sleep + Dexter = Winner.

Oh man, not only does Dex bear a striking resemblance to an old Boston coworker that I may or may not have made out with a few times, but the show indulges the morbid side of me that loves Law & Order SVU (okay, so part of that is morbidity and part of that is Detective Elliot Stabler) and Bones (see also: Sully), even though, yes, it does end up scaring me. Last night, after we’d finished the season finale and it was way, way past my bedtime, I headed upstairs while the Dork Lord took the beast out for a walk. I will freely admit that on the way, I turned on every single light, checked the closets and even yanked back the shower curtain before I could commit to brushing my teeth and leaving myself vulnerable to bad guys. They always getcha when you’re brushing your teeth! Or, they grab at your ankles while you’re getting in bed, so you have to check there, too. And probably behind the blackout curtains. Bad guys are crafty.

I had surprisingly calm dreams last night.

Blue Bell is totally worth it.

  • Wait till you’re caught up to the current season! The finale of the most recent season was KILLER! Sorry for the silly pun, I couldn’t help it.

  • oh my goodness, manfriend and i are addicted to dexter. can’t wait until this season comes out on dvd!

Geez, I do all that stuff every day… because of my obsession with scary movies & the fact that I watch the news all the time, I am ALWAYS afraid of bad guys getting me. Even when I walk into a store or (especially!) little corner 7-11′s, I try to eye up everyone and pick out the one most likely to rob the joint and kill us all…and I keep my eye on that person the entire time! LOL

  • Dexter is the best show on television, by far! I love Michael C. Hall (even watching those Dodge commercials he narrates I get shivers). His character is so amazing. Just wait til you see the last season, awe-some! :)

Sooo funny cuz that’s exactly what I did this weekend. Nothing. Oh, and watch 7 hours straight of Criminal Minds on Memorial Day. Perfect!

Karen – I thought I had recovered months after the most recent season finale of Dexter. Now you’ve brought it up again and I may just need to throw yet another tantrum. HOW COULD THEY????!!!???

Oh, come on now. Don’t allude to stuff four seasons down the road. That’s just rude.

That’s awesome! That’s exactly what I did!! (Although I have seen up to the current season :) ) We rented from the library and watched all of Season 1 in only two little days…haven’t done that since college! :)

I love Dexter; I watched the entire second season in two days. I’ve seen the first three seasons, and I think the first is probably the best of the three but I’ve heard that the fourth is really good too – can’t wait until it’s available on Netflix!

Bones is not as well written (plotwise) but I’m hooked on the characters! I saw a few minutes of the current season (I’m a couple of seasons behind) and I cannot believe they have not hooked up yet! Ok, maybe I can…but still, get on with it already!

Don’t even talk to me about Law & Order – those marathons seriously just eat my time.

Surprisingly none of those shows scare me.. but have you seen The Lovely Bones? Sleepless night after that one.

OK, so I have been reading your blog for well over two years now, and I have to say that I love you. It’s true, I love you. I’m sure had we ever met in real life we would be great friends. You are honest to the core, and that is so rare these days. I don’t care what anyone says, I, for one, appreciate you telling it like it is. Like so many women, I too have been through the highs and lows of dating, childhood trauma/drama, and endless career/soul searching. I love that you remain true to yourself; pain, hope, romanticism, threats of ending up alone with wine induced cat-loving utopia and all…and yet you are brave enough week in and week out to bear your soul to the masses…something I would never be brave enough to do. I find myself rooting for you, because, perhaps in a twisted way, I feel like we (women) are in this muck together, and your stories give me hope and help me laugh at my own absurdities. For this, I sincerely appreciate you and I wish you a lifetime of love, happiness, and joy.

thank you for this. i honestly thought that we were the only couple spending an entire saturday watching tv series (currently it’s THE WIRE, before that THE WEST WING, before that SOPRANOS and so on and so on). at least no one else i know does.people look at us as if we are the most dysfunctional couple, EVER. so, what a relief, i love that you guys do the same!!! (tomorrow is a holiday in Germany and i am actually thankful for the bad weather forecast – does this go to far?)
