Hoo-boy, am I in a fix. To make a long story short, on Sunday, I rescued a mother cat and 4 3-week-old babies. The mother was starving so she was very amenable to being scooped up by the resident cat whisperer and is quite contentedly living in our spare room/office.

For now.

I am taking care of 9 cats. It’s exhausting. And expensive.

These lovely creatures need homes. They are the sweetest most exquisite little beings. I’ve spent the last several days hand-feeding the babies while mama got her strength back. What a handful! Last night, we learned how to lap from a dish! It was all very exciting. Everyone is getting strong, healthy and adventurous and so playful.

Here are some factoids:

1. Four babies and 1 mama, all very adoptable. The mama is less than a year old, sweet as anything and I’ve never met a cat who wanted to be loved so much. I get a lump in my throat thinking about what she went through, being uncared for.

2. Two boys, two girls. Currently named after Texas Rangers. KittenFace Gentry (don’t tell the others that he’s my favorite), Hamilton, Nelly and Holly (after Holland).

3. I will get them all fixed if I have to. I just can’t keep them. NINE CATS. DID YOU HEAR ME? NINE.

Please, pretty please, email me (thisfish at gmail dot com) if you live in the area and would like to meet them. Even if you can only foster! The no-kill shelters in the area are currently full but that won’t always be the case.

Please pass this on to anyone else you may know who has a big heart with room for a little fuzzball. The idea that they might not go to loving homes keeps me up at night with worry. They are so very sweet and helpless.

We are going out of state on the 25th – I’m desperate to get them caring parents by that time.

It’s impossible to get stills of these little guys right now – they wiggle! So here’s some video I captured a couple days ago.

Oh, I wish I lived in your area! They are adorable and who can pass up a kitten (or two or three!)? I just spent over $750 on my 1 1/2 year old getting her treated for cystitis. She’s still not 100%, but that’s probably because I’m trying to get her to eat canned food instead of dry…which was causing her to not get enough fluids. I am watching her like a hawk and I’m driving her crazy with my constant monitoring! Good luck finding the perfect homes for all your little ones!

  • I just died of cute. I hope you find someone to help you with these lovely furballs Fish! I tweeted about needing help, hopefully the interwebs can bring you some more loving people to take them in.

Wait, wait, nine? Hal plus Midge plus mama and babies = 7? Did we miss something?

Also, I am in DC and a dog person, but if anyone in the DC area is looking for kittens, a friend just adopted an outdoor cat who, upon being taken to the vet to be spayed, turned out to be pregnant. There are at least 3 kittens who are a couple weeks old at this point!

Mama Cass and Frances Baby Houseman (http://thisfish.com/?p=2403) – the two feral cats we rescued last summer. They live on the back deck. :)

Ah, of course, how could I have forgotten? Lucky you, to be the feline social center of the greater Dallas area! And good luck finding homes for the new bunch!

Hi! I’m in the DC area and my sister (also in the DC area) is looking for a kitten. Email me at lyssa919 AT hotmail dot com. We’re totally nice, reliable, sane people, and my sister is already a responsible pet owner.

  • Sending you a bit of cat food $. Wish I could do more. Heartbreakingly adorable. Is your vet giving you breeder rate? Some do.

Hopefully, this will help… There are links to coupons and vets for low-cost fixing. :)

You have such a big warm heart. I wish I lived in your area I would totally take a kitten or two. I do know someone that lives in your area (kind of). I’m going to email her and see if she’s interested. Good Luck, but I’m sure you’ll find loving homes for them.

  • what part of texas do you live in (I forgot) I have a couple of cat loving friends who live in the state that may be able to help you out.

I’m in Dallas. Thank you for your help – I’m just heartsick about this kitties. We leave town in 2 weeks and my options for them are very few (only kill shelters will take cats right now).

  • Kjammo

I am in Australia so cannot assist with takinga kitten or two – But yet again you remind us readers how big your heart is and how generous you are.

  • PK

I hear my friend contacted you and is taking one of the boys! YAY! Hopefully when she comes to pick him up she’ll fall in love and take another ;)

My FIL and SIL both live in Texas, I’ll check what area they’re in and fwd them this as both are cat people.

Have you contacted Operation Kindness in Carrollton? I’m not sure if they are full or not. I also live in Dallas and I’d like to help in any way I can. Unfortunately, I live in a condo and already have 2 cats or I’d take these babies in a heartbeat.

    • thisfish

Operation Kindness is not taking cats. Seriously, I called anyone I could find within 70 miles.

I passed a link on to a FB friend who lives in Dallas by posting it on her FB wall. She might be able to help or maybe some of her local FB friends can.

I so hope that you can find them all homes; it was sooo good of you to rescue them. Please encourage any adopters to get the kittens spayed or neutered when they are of appropriate age. I’m in St. Louis and I volunteer with a local no-kill cat shelter and we, too, are just FULL of cats and kittens right now. We cannot take one more kitten in and adoptions are slow. The sad statistics of kill shelters is that 7 out of 10 cats/kittens that go into a shelter are euthanized. Alley Cat Allies is a national organization with a lot of good resources and information http://www.alleycat.org Hoping you can get them all homes – keep us updated!

I wish I could help! On Friday I lost my 1 year old cat to heart disease. We had no warning and feel pretty lost without her. Alas, I’m in Wisconsin, so I can’t adopt one of these adorable kitties. Best of luck to you. They sure are lucky you found them!

  • Not that I have a huge Dallas following, but I’ll tweet this post for you. You never know!

Glad you’re doing ok otherwise. Congratulations on the new nephew!

  • Terri

Posted this on my fb page. Hoping for the best!

Isn’t a “Happy Belated Anniversary!!!” due you? Didn’t you start this blog 10 years ago this month? Just noticed this as I wanted to see how far back your archives went so I could know how much I had to read to catch up. This is some good reading here …

  • Oh my, if I was local I would absolutely help. I know it’s hard but you are doing an amazing thing by helping these cats. Good luck with the fostering – I hope they find a new home soon.

    Happy Birthday!

  • Please keep us updated!

Fish – you have the biggest heart ever!

But no little posting on thoughts of what occurred on July 15, 2002? Years go by. Memory gone and all that, I suppose. L’chaim!
