I got home from Phoenix around 11:30 last night, then twelve hours later, hopped in my car to drive down to Austin for ACL (Austin City Limits Music Festival). I made excellent time and decided to catch a catnap at my sister’s apartment before heading out to Zilker park. I woke up drooling on my arm an hour and a half later. Some catnap.
Hoping to get in a a little time with Stephanie and Family, I texted her husband Phil to see what they were up to.
Heather: I’m in town for ACLfest
Phil: Adding “fest” to any word makes it fun.
Heather:You should start referring to the kids as “twinfest”
Phil: Start? You mean continue!
Heather: Diaperfest! Teethingfest!
Phil: Yeehaw.
Heather: So what are you jokers doing for dinner?
Phil: Stephanie’s writing…. some would call it “writing fest.”
And a new, ready to run into the ground, inside joke was formed. I live for that stuff. It’s probably genetic. There are so many jokes in my family that have survived years of overuse. Jokes that I will someday program into my kids, jokes these unwitting children will on the playground and get blank stares and probably even a few beatings.
God, I can’t wait to be a parent.

Hope the Phoenix writing gig turned up trumps for you.
Thank you, it totally did! More details on Monday!
I like your humour… it comes out of nowhere. Reminds me of the way my sis can make a mundane conversation, fun.
Not to dampen your spirits, but what will you do if your children refuse to be programmed and fed those jokes?! I think a lot about how I’ll bring up my kids but when I see my nieces and nephews I realise this thing about ‘you can’t plan anything in your life’ is especially true once you have children!
Samesies.
i love it! it’s typically a lovefest when reading your blog.
I’m at ACL too! Isn’t the weather great? Did you see the fire?! I thought these things were supposed to END with a bang. i guess i should be making jokes…
Enjoy saturday’s line-up and make sure to take the kids to the Sippy cups! Its fun for the whole family.
Don’t avoid….we want to know how the meetingfest went!
I’m in my mid-twenties and I’ve known my two best friends for 16 and 20 years, respectively. We still laugh our asses off at inside jokes that lost any relevance to our lives at least 10 years ago. It’s so great
Love it. My friends and I would call crappy bars “Dorkfest” but we also like to add the year so it seems like an annual event. Like welcome to “Dorkfest 07.”
Been reading your blog for a while – this is my first comment. You are hilarious. I’m new to blogfest 07. Whoo hoo. It’s fun.
Your babies would be adorable, highly intelligent, cute, irresistible, quirky, funny… um, Fish, can I have your babies??
I’m so jealous…my boyfriend is at ACL too. Bob Dylan? Lucky duckfest…
Kids make for awesome stories
everything becomes a fest when you have a little baby to take care of…every single second!
Unless they came across my family. Its all about wordplay (which is what attracted me to your column – more than a pretty face) and humor which is all good. Heard the fest is awesome. May I recommend Peter Bjorn and John, Bjork, Bela Fleck and to balance anything out of control or get it out of your system – The Mighty Clouds of Joy. CariFest and Jazzfest are favorites. College fratfests are still hooey. George Carlin (Jumbo-Shrimp), Seinfeld and Norm Crosby are kings of wordplay.
In respone to M’s reply sept 15 – sometimes amongst good friends sometimes even words get transcended and all that is needed is a knowing glance between you to crack everyone up!! LOL (we’ve all been there – you know what i mean) …and yes the stares from “outsiders” make it even more hilarious.
A Torn ACL (or blown) in baseball or football is the end of a players careers (the achilles heel). There you go, couldn’t resist. Off topic – You see Litte Stevie at the Emmies. His garage band radio show was a major influence on David Chase, as it turns out.
If at all possible, see “Muse” while at the ACL Festivus…trust me, they will blow you away. Blow I say!
you were in Austin and we had no Fishfest. how sad.
hope you had a great time at ACL!
My gal pals and I like to add -en to the end of things…and we chat in strange voices when we are together and sober. Now, get a little alcohol in our systems and it becomes a very serious debate/discussion it is strange and that is just how we are.
Can’t wait to hear about Phoenix!
oh the “fest” words running through my head! sh**fest being one of them. sounds more gross than fun.
I have a child you can have if you want to get started.
did you have fun at ACL fest? I sure did, but happy to be home out of the heat-fest. just not as funny as I had imagined. welcome home from all your travels.
