dreaminess, unillustrated

I’m sitting on the stone steps that lead up to my new apartment right now, catching sun and waiting for a furniture delivery. A new couch. Not to replace the one that is (hopefully) speedily on its way here from New York, but to fill in the empty space I like to call the den/office/this-is-where-I-pretend-to-work space. It’s crimson colored and perfectly squishy and the best part is, it pulls out to a bed. Seriously, people, the Aerobed is a nice idea, but

Oh holy cow. I must interrupt myself to tell you that some dude just came into view (not three yards away), and as he hasn’t noticed me, has begun pacing, smoking a cigarette and… adjusting himself. With, shall we say, real spirit and conviction. Amusing.

Anyway, I am growing less and less fond of the Aerobed. So in the Great Spending Binge of 2007, I bought the red couch of dreams. When I find the cords that go with all my computer attachments (iPod, camera), I’ll show you just how dreamy. Such redness! Such squishiness!

Red! Squishy!

Speaking of dreamy! Yesterday, I bought a car. My first, very own, mine-all-mine car. I absolutely love it. I haven’t had a car at my disposal for… well, over five years. And never, ever have I had one that was mine. Mine to futz with (hello, sunroof) and wash and drive fast and sing out loud in. I couldn’t be happier! Again, when I make the Big Cord Discovery of 2007, I’ll show you just how dreamy that is, too.

Oh, and Sir Hal traveled fairly well; thanks to everyone for the helpful first time kitty flier suggestions. The poor beast clung to the bottom of his Sherpa bag for dear life, but there were no major incidents. Unless you count the bloody tracks he left on my shoulder at security. We’ve both since recovered from the trauma.

I’m gonna go hunt for those cords again. So much dreaminess to share.

UPDATE: New apartment slideshow!

  • gretchen

Wow. New couch, new car, new house! Enjoy the spending and the newness and the adventure. In the meantime, what’s wrong with the Aerobed? Inquiring minds want to know.

  • Barbara E.

    Ooo, new car. What kind?

  • Woohoo! New stuff!

You sound so happy! It’s obvious you’re having a wonderful Great Southwestern Move of 2007! I was laughing and smiling through the whole post. And, oh my god, how I’ve always wanted a squishy red couch! Enjoy

  • Welcome into the world of car karaoke! Remember to roll up the windows at stop lights. Trust me. :) Congratulations on the move.

Hey Heathuh, I can’t believe you’re in Texas. A good friend of mine is moving to Austin in June for a year for school. I’ll be visiting, we must get together! You can meet my daughter, Nora. Say hello to Sir Halitosis.

  • stone steps, interesting neighbors and red couch— What could be better! Enjoy your new place. think of the adventures waiting for you. Can’t wait to hear more about it.

  • rick from canada

Glad to hear you both made it in one piece …. i’ve always found there is an indeterminate time when you move into a new place when after work for example you think to yourself “i’m going to my new apartment” magically and imperceptably becomes “i’m going home” … about the red couch … i highly recommend a book of photographs called “the red couch” photographs by kevin clarke and horst wackerbarth … its about moving a huge red couch out of their apartment and lugging it all over america and photogrpahing it in different locations … and the annotations are brilliant

  • I am slowly realized that I may have to take my cats on an airplane next year, and I’m trying to figure out what happens when they need to…well, relieve themselves? Do they just go in the carrier on the plane?

  • I have squishy red couch envy. And sunshine envy. And new car envy.

  • squee! congrats on your new and fabulous purchases! you do indeed sound thrilled and relaxed and happy. can’t wait to see pics of these new additions to your texas family!

  • You sound happy…truly, truly happy! :) CONGRATS!!

Aerobeds should be renamed ‘air let out of bed’. Always seems to loose air at inopportune times. I’ve had to replace the seal from the manufacturer twice – then just gave up, or it would’ve become something out of the Benny Hill Show. The sunsets in Dallas must be beautiful. Expect a complete accounting from you. Your Ipod color should be Santa Fe Stucco.

  • Eileen

Glad you are happy. Keep enjoying your new opportunities, experiences and self!

  • G

I’ll send you a photo of myself posing with my new cookware if you send me a photo of yourself lying on the hood of your new car.

It’s a good deal. You should take it.

  • What car what car?

I just bought a Mini Cooper… LOVE IT and I can identify with your vehicle-ownership enthusiasm!

Congratulations on your move and the car! Pictures!

  • Big up!

Find those cords! I can’t wait to see your collection of beer coozies and goose-poop art, or whatever they use for decoration in Texas ;)

    Glad you made it safe.

  • Sudha

    New Car? wow!!!!!

sigh! it’ll be atleast 2 more yrs now, b4 i an buy one of my own. and I ALWAYS wanted my own car :(

  • lawyerchik1

Glad you and Sir Hal made it safely!! Hope you like the Big D area – are you in Dallas proper or one of the surrounds? Two words: Galleria Mall….. (trust me).

  • This Fish

    1. I got a Jetta. A black one. We’re in love.

    2. Yes, I live in Dallas. The Galleria was fun when I was a teenager… but man, it’s been a while since I liked malls.

  • Sounds like this new adventure already has you in high spirits.

Congrats on the new car and new couch!

  • trish

check out the lakewood and fair park area for laid back bars and restraunts. cosmos, lee harvey’s, meridian room, amsterdam bar and doublewide are some of my favs.

  • CaliGal

:) I’m so happy for you…on so many levels!! Congrats!!

  • Congratulations on a successful move! Can’t wait to view all the dreaminess :)

  • Midtown NYC

This fish needed a bicycle, but got a Jetta instead.

  • rodney

..car? sigh, you should have stuck with the bicycle. …what with the climate meltdown threat and all..well…hmmmpf

  • This Fish

Oh, yes a bicycle would be very practical in Dallas. I’m SO glad you set me straight.

  • “Redness and squishiness” are two things I know quite well.

    Welcome (back) to Texas, Loverly.

  • Hey! Great interview with About.com. I’m trying out one of your tips right now! You’ve really given me some inspiration to keep working on my blog. Thanks for leading the way!

  • What a happy post, I love it! Welcome to the midwest. :) I’ve loved reading stephanie’s blog since she moved from New York, I’m sure yours will be just as fantastic. Oh, and congrats on the new car and couch!

  • Yay! You are there! And Hal as well, hooray!

  • Welcome to the world of driving your own spiffy automobile…are you going to get even more corded car accessories so that your lovely little iPod can accompany you on your trips away form your red squishy couch?

  • Congrats on the fun life makeover! It makes me want a new car and a new red couch!!! Can the rest of us do that without the big move?

Hopefully the next man you meet won’t be quite so self-involved :)

  • Liz

Welcome to the world of newness! I’m still on the high from buying a camper (37 foot travel trailer). I know it doesn’t sound as exciting as a new car, new apartment and new couch…but a girl has to take her newness when she can!

  • Ron

Jetta? Diesel or gas? Stick or automatic?

Have fun thar in Dallas. It makes you realize how “everything is big in Texas.” I hope some of the bluebonnets are still out; they are quite pretty.

When you want to start exploring, Austin and San Antonio are pretty interesting places.

  • previous commenters are correct – you sound wonderful. And may your red couch be as good to you as one I once had – man I loved that couch.

I’m going through a change that requires me to also buy a car, my first in 7 years and I’m really resisting it. I hope your enthusiasm rubs off. Drive safely – when I left NYC I had a hard time adjusting to traveling above ground again. I became a v. nervous passenger.

  • Min

Congratulations on your move and the new Jetta… a car is a must in Dallas (or in any Texas city, for that matter).

Must-do’s in Dallas: shop at NorthPark and Mockingbird Station, see a concert at the Gypsy Tea Room, attend a Mavs game (I myself have yet to do this), eat Korean food & sing karaoke on Harry Hines (kinda ghetto)…

There has to be more, but I blanked out.

  • Oh wow, what fun! And red is a hott color.

  • Emily

Congrats on the move! You sound really happy. Could you talk more about how you made the decision and the courage it took to take the leap. I live in NYC and am looking to take a major leap in my life and would love to find out how one makes that decision.

    Again – Congratulations!

  • wow, I love your new couch! And it looks totally comfy with the otoman to rest your feet on. I would have bought a red couch myself because I love all things red, but I have a golden retriever, so it wasn´t such a good idea color-wise. I did get a red chair similar to yours, though the back of my chair is made of wood with a panel of wicker (not sure if that´s the correct word).

Anyway, good to see you are enjoying your new surroundings and all the excitement associated with it.

  • Good thing you use a moving service. A hide-a-bed like that one is better known as a hide-a-ton.* The only thing more fun than helping a friend move one of those into a top floor walk-up flat is when they also have a large collection of vinyl.

Glad to hear the move’s going well.

*Making an assumption here. It might be made out of space-age polymers and pixie dust. In which case I hope you splurged for the one with real ground up pixies, it’s much lighter than the artificial stuff.

  • This Fish

Ha! That was a Mike-quality comment there, Colecanth. Hilarious.

  • Where did you get tat tasty couch from?!!? I LOVE IT!

From This Fish: Thanks! It’s from Rooms to Go.

  • lawyerchik1

LOVE the chair (and the pillow) – the couch looks very squooshy as well, although I wonder how well it will hold up under marathon TV sessions.

Still and all, very cool stuff, Fish!!

  • Jodi

Do we also get to see a picture of the new car? Please! For those of us who dream on a new car.

  • Kristin

Just a little tip from past experience of owning a red couch from Rooms to Go myself, be careful when you wear white and lounge on your sofa….it just might turn it pink. I still loved it especially after the color stopped rubbing off on my clothing. :-)

  • I really think I need that sofa. Or, at the very least, the chair.

    Target? Really?

  • Sara

So funny, when you started talking about the new couch, I was rolling around in lovely thoughts of my dreamy red couch. Now I see pictures, and it looks as though we have good taste…that IS my couch…well your version of my couch. Same ottoman, same everything….it treats me good. You will love it. By the by, the fold out bed sucks and sleeps terrible!

From This Fish: Yeah, it’s not the greatest, but I have an inch and half of memory foam on top, so guests will not want to kill me in my sleep.

  • Kristen

Okay, so I LOVE YOUR APARTMENT! That bookshelf you have to the left of your couch is what I have been hunting for. Do you remember where you got it? You have some good taste, chick.
