if you felt a little wobble in the earth’s rotation

“I think my heart actually swelled.”

“I know.”

“Really. I mean, I felt it grow. How often does that happen?”

Almost never. I mean, I sometimes wear a cynic suit, but in reality, I am one of the most easily-delighted people possible. I cry at commercials, I love babies, I smile at children – even the horrid ones – because I can’t stop myself. But what I experienced when Jamie and I went to see Enchanted this afternoon was some other-worldly, ooey-gooey, heart-expanding glee. Ooh, Disney, you’re good. Very good. That shit was romantic.

Rated G swoon.

I was still experiencing an enlarged heart when I got home, so I popped in a CD, snapped on a pair of yellow plastic gloves and cleaned the kitchen to Harry Belafonte. I did the Rumba. I scared the cat. And I thought about how I need a hoop skirt and how more movies need over-the-top, totally unbelievable musical numbers in the middle of Central Park. Then I poured a glass of wine and turned on a grisly crime drama.

Because I knew if I sustained that kind of momentum, I’d end up writing sappy Christmas cards or forgiving ex-boyfriends. And I didn’t want to be responsible for throwing the planet out of alignment.

wow, i must have become a total grinch. i saw that very same movie today. hated it. must have to do with hating heartbreak, and not believing in fairytales. cuz, otherwise? it was super cute.

  • i always read your blog and its amazing how alike we think…i could have perfectly written this post, starting with how you wear a cynic suit to how you were afraid of sending letters to ex boyfriends after watching “enchanted”, haha needless to say, i adore your blog.

    xoxo

  • its amazing how much i always relate to your posts but i found today’s particularly freaky because i swear i could have written every single word of it myself. i loved the movie and also felt a bit like “drunk-dialing/messaging” old flames except i wasn’t drunk it was all derived from giselle’s upbeat views on love…haha needless to say i adore your blog. xoxo.

  • “Really. I mean, I felt it grow. How often does that happen?”

Everytime TBS shows “How the Grinch stole Christmas” of course! :)

There is nothing in the world so sugary sweet that a good, grisly crime drama can’t set the world back to rights. I just finished a “Santa Marathon” on tv that required a high-powered testosterone- filled shoot-em-up movie the same evening. That and a dentist.

i have already seen the movie twice and i have loved every last second of it!! hooray for Disney! :)

  • Yes!!! That movie totally rocked my world on Thanksgiving day. It’s so good even my fiance liked it and he’s normally not into the gooey love movies. Rock on, Disney.

Instead of ex-bofriends or husbands I’ve decided to call them ‘inactive’,,,,kinda puts the action back on them. Just a thought.

lOVED IT! It made me believe. I saw it with my 11 year old daughter and yes even my 13 year old son. His name …well at least now is Prince Edward. (Eddie the rest of the time) LOL. My favorite part. “I don’t think he’s comming, I know he is”

  • I want to see this movie now because I want that “I love you man” feeling.

    Cool.

i totally got the “enchanted” high, too. disney is so good it should be illegal.

  • Did Amy Adams wear a push-up bra in that movie? Because let me just say, damn.

  • OMG!!! I get all mushy gushy whenever the ad for that movie comes on the tv, and my roomies make fun of me! I think it looks adorable and hilarious, and now I have the proof I was right! So my roomies, they can suck it!

  • I didn’t see the movie, but your post will do- your blog tends to make my heart smile. Your blog and my kid, though the latter often has the edge. Seeing as you love babies (rest assured, mine is damn loveable), I’m sure you understand.

  • saw it too. loved it. teary-eyed, felt like it could be real, loved it.

  • thelovewithin

Right now I’m feeling down in the dumps about love so I’m ready to go see this movie to help me believe in something again. Here I come ENCHANTED!

  • Liz

hehe, I think my boyfriend liked it even more than I did. Two days after we saw it we were having dinner and he quoted the movie! And then he followed it up with a “That movie was really cute!” :)

  • And what you described was exactly how I felt when I walked out. I think I liked it more than my girls did. But that was probably because of Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden…. yeah, that’s it.

  • CaliGal

    Ahhh…LOVE…. :)

  • My mom was telling me how she and my dad went to go see that movie. I was like, You do realize that both your kids are in their twenties and you don’t *have* to watch G-rated movies anymore, right? But apparently it’s just that good.

I took my parents to it over Thanksgiving and was snickering with glee at what lay in store. They, instead, started to bitch and complain when the animation geared up. But then they realized it was tongue and cheek. I loved this movie!

  • I can’t wait til it comes out on video, cuz with a newborn it’s kinda hard to get to the movies. But I REALLY want to see it. (now with all the gushing, I want to see it more!)

  • Aw, Fish, you are too cute!! I’ve been wanting to see Enchanted since I saw the trailer this past summer, I might just have to go (although it will probably be dubbed in Spanish here)

  • I love how you finished off this post… great spin. ;)

  • Hey, nothing wrong with a little rated G swoon. But really, I think you need to follow it up with a rated R swoon. You know, to knock the earth back into alignment or something. Yeah, that’s it. : )

  • I loved it so much I wrote a poem,

and haven’t stopped “A-ah-a-ah-a-ing” since I got home!

hey Fish…been a big fan of yours..just went to your earliest posts, written way back in 2002 and they sound suspiciously like Helen Fielding’s- Bridget Jones Diary. Totally completely. Maybe you followed a similar writing style back then.

I wanted to add that your current, more mature, humor-added style is a lot better. Easier to connect to, better to read.

You write splendidly…and I know I’m one of the many who tell you that :)

I am so with you on that one, I LOVED that movie. I went with my almost 6yo daughter and my husband and at least 10 times during the movie, I turned to my husband and said.. I LOVE this, it is so happy! (he did not exactly share my sentiments). I can’t wait to see it again. When she was singing down the streets of NY, I was gleeful.

  • Megan

I went with a group of girl friends and we cheered and clapped and swooned it was so much fun. It didn’t take long for the rest of the theater to join us in our delighted interaction. The feeling wore off about a day later…but that’s what dvds are for, right? :)

  • I am a hopeless romantic so I loved this film! So want to see it again!

  • Ha! At least you didn’t have the rodents helping you clean. I loved the movie, too. I have a friend who is almost as good as the princess, too!

Since I would have to be the wicked stepmother, I’d get to wear those bitchin’ platforms Sarandon rocked in.

  • I want to see that movie so much…over the weekend I seen two movies…one being “The Mist” which I dosed off twice…the other being “This Christmas”…which was a feel good movie…when you leave you’re feeling a higher notch of love…I suggest people see it.

  • Ooh, now I want to see “Enchanted.” But then again, I’d probably see anything with Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden in it.

  • Well, I haven’t seen Enchanted yet, but I watched a movie last night that gave me almost the same feeling. It reminded me of this post. I hope that you don’t mind, but I linked to yours.

Now, I have to go find a girlfriend to go to the movies with.

When I saw Enchanted, I had seen the commercials but I didn’t know Idina Menzel was in it. When she first came on screen, I almost screamed “It’s Idina!!”

Yay for being embarrassed in an almost full theatre. And yay for being foolish about love!

  • Who the hell is Idina? And what is Enchanted? And what’s kiafest? And what’s this Christmas that everyone keeps talking about? What’s going on around here!?

  • LK

I loved that movie as well and we are ok, beacuse it is rated PG not G.
