on borrowed resolve

I’m not really one for making New Year’s resolutions.

It seems to work better for me to recognize – at whatever point during the year – that something needs changing, then sit on my ass until the problem gets bad enough that I’m forced into action. I like to think I’m waiting until I’m emotionally ready to effect change. Whatever that means, it never seems to fall on the first of January.

Like, it’s not at the end of December when I become concerned that I look like a fat, segmented insect in a bikini. That shiny little ray of inspiration usually dawns on me in March or April. And in case there was some question over just how resolute my resolutions are, I have the same pupae in a bikini feeling every single spring. Me, I lack follow-through.

Except, notably, on the subject of men. And who knows where that willpower came from?

Anyhow, I am very seriously considering adopting a New Year’s resolution – just for the sake of being a joiner. To see if I can hack it. In the meantime, what are some of yours? You know, in case it comes down to the wire and I have to borrow one.

  • i resolve to write my friend becca who’s in mauritania for the peace corps, one letter a week.

i also resolve to work hard enough doing freelance work that i can save for an apple workstation.

I made the Best New Year’s Resolution Ever last year, and even today, on December 31, am still following it:

When someone wants to do something nice for me, or help me, or give me something, I say thanks, and let them.

You would be amazed at how hard this is to do in regular life, but once it is a New Year’s Resolution, it is a life changer. And seriously, it has made me into a better person. Now I just have to come up with one as smart and beneficial for 2008!

Well, I don’t think I’ve ever made a New Year’s resolution involving guys, but I have resolved never to make a school, career or location move just because of a guy. I have to live with me, and who knows if it’ll work out with him?

My New Year’s resolution is to keep in better contact with old friends. I’m pretty bad at email correspondence.

    1. get professional accreditation. I’ve been working on one of these for a year and it is pretty much a gimmie. The other will actually take some follow thru

    2. admit that ‘just being healthy’ isn’t why I work out. It is about the weight – I’ll set a modest goal and hit it.

I’m resolving to read at least 12 books this year (hopefully 1 a month). I love to read but never seem to find the time, and this resolution will actually be fun for me to stick to.

Feel free to recommend any good reads. I’m an Amazon Prime member!

  • I actually made a resolution a few years ago to stop making resolutions. It has gone swimmingly!

I do have a goal though: Finish. Writing. That. Book. I will not move on to 2009 without reaching it. Even if I have to leave the calendar on December 2008 for 12 months…

Have a happy darlin’. May all your dreams come true.

    I plan on starting a savings account. I’m 23 and …gotta be a grown up now…kinda!

To choose sincerity over sarcasm more often. To look people in the eye. To discover what this patience I keep hearing about is.

…to meditate at least 10 minutes a day – surprisingly very difficult for my overly-analytical self. Happy New Year.

I resolve to setting and implimenting boundaries with men and by doing this hopefully it will be the year for me to possibly be closer to finding true love whether it’s with someone else or myself.

  • I don’t make resolutions either. I’m tempted to this year, but really, I’ve had these “resolutions” since I moved to Canada. Go out, meet people, make friends, etc.

  • Ooon, I’m stealing all of MissFitz’s

i’ve always thought that we punish ourselves with negative resolutions. So I try and make postive resolutions. The best one yet? “drink more champagne”. that made for a great year!

I really like Heidi’s resolution thought to just say thank you and let people help. I’m going to do that this year. Thanks!

  • To try to find something to be happy about every day, even if it’s something teeny-tiny.

Love the Relationship Resolutions. Thanks for sharing your tidbits with us and remaining such a strong woman. It inspires me tremendously.

My resolution is to stop sitting on the fence about a certain relationship and to stop saying “it’s okay” because it really isn’t. In your immortal words – Unhinge this!

    Happy New Year!

  • I resolve to lose weight, learn how to surf, knit and finally…learn how to ride a bike. Better late than never!

  • Loose weight…duh. Chubby no more!!!(this is actually my new year’s resolution every year, and it never happens…but I had great luck with my other resolutions in 2007, so who knows. Maybe this is the year to lose the gut…)

Oh, and to Liza: you need to purchase and read “The Human Stain” by Philip Roth IMMEDIATELY! I’ve never been more moved by a work of fiction…

  • Sheila

I’m also not one for the official resolution. I did, however, decide last year to start “doing the right thing, and for the right reason”. It surprised me how many times i found myself referring back to this throughout the year. I’m far from perfect, but i believe i’m a better person, and i’m definately making better decisions. I may just stick with this one every year!

My resolution is to have some self control over my social drinking. I find that I just don’t throw in the towel soon enough and then I pay for it for the next couple of days. I am turning 30 this year and it’s time that I can be the life of the party without being the life of the party!

Happy 2008 to you Fish, thanks for always providing a good read.

I resolve to lose a pound a week. And keep it off. I’ll be too thin then, but oh to hear someone say “I wish I had your figure”…

  • Glovefox

To get back in the saddle again with exercising – gym workouts, swim sessions etc. It’s not so much because I want to lose weight (because I’ve accepted that I will never be Kate Moss skinny) but because I’d like to keep my energy levels high and my brain cells functioning.

Yeah, that and maybe getting a new boyfriend. It’s been just over two years since my last relationship – time to get a move on with things in this department!

Ive made a resolve NOT to be so angry at everything … it just wastes too much time and energy…i’ve also made a resolved to (finally) make a serious attempt to rebuild bridges with my daughter … and finally ive made a resolve to take back control of my apartment from my two cats (who think they own everything in sight) and make sure I get the choice sleeping spot for a change LOL

hope 2008 is a good one for all of us.

  • My resolution is to stop biting my nails. I started it about 3 weeks ago and read that to keep it up I should get regular manicures. So I started off 2008 with a spa manicure :)

  • Jonathan

    2008: Get more tail!

  • 1. Stick to a vegetarian lifestyle

    2. Blog more often, and improve my daily readers.

    3. Stay away from him

  • Resolutions are made to be broken, so I may as well have some I dont want to break…LIKE. Each more chocolate, then I wont feel guilty about breaking it, cause it won’t be broken. But truthfully, I’m not one for resolutions either…I wrote about it on my blog.

My New Year resolution is to love my live in girl friend of 17 years even more. I have been saving for a house for a number of years. So I am hoping to buy her the dream house of her choice. She wants a cat (which I don’t want) but I promise to get over it and enjoy pets in the house. Every day I discover how lucky I am to be with my best friend as well as the love of my life. I cherish her more every day. I am a very lucky guy

  • Hillary

Kevin, you are a special guy. Your girl is lucky to have you.

I resolve to run at least 3x a week and hopefully more. I resolve to stick to my 6 month plan to remove toxic people from my life. I resolve to smile more and not be so angry – after the 6 month toxin cleanse is over. Maybe my “New Year” should start May 1……

    Happy New Year Fish!

My resolution is to do something fun and social every 10 days. I was a hermit for the second half of last year, so I figure this will not allow my job to dominate every aspect of my life. (The ’10 days’ instead of ’1 week’ is to recognize that on some weekends, I really, really need to curl up with a book and have an early night.)

My parents don’t approve of my less-conservative-than-theirs lifestyle, so my resolution is to keep the lines of communication open and work on my relationship with them. In the past I’ve just cut them off from knowing anything about what I’m doing or thinking, but difficult as it is I love them and I’m resolving to make an effort to include them in my life.

  • I’ve resolved to not try so hard to impress people, especially my friends. Just do my thing, and people will think what they will. Do it for me, not them.

  • A few years ago I made a resolution to become more financially responsible- pay all my bills on time and avoid late fees, get a grip on my student loans and credit cards, and figure out exactly how much I had in my checking account. It’s amazing how much fear and stress goes away when you do these simple things. Two years later, my student loans were completely paid off!

  • I’m not one to make resolutions either, but I admire your willingness to take on another challenge. I came across some links to help you and your readers along the way.

My New Year’s Resolution was to take things slower with men. Well, that was until I met a cute guy and got lots of kisses at midnight. Ooops!

  • I got nothing……. I achieved everything I wanted to last year, and life is now just grand.

    Oh, who am I kidding?

  • Ray

Nada. I do what I have to do when I have to do it. Why give myself something else to stress about. I got in the best shape of my life in September because that’s when I was ready.

  • Mel

Pay my utility bills on time? That one could be tough though!

  • I’m with you – New Year’s Resolutions are just not for me. I’ll make something happen if and when I decide something needs to be done. Designating something as a resolution is just as bad as having my mother tell me to do it (i.e., it is NEVER going to happen). Happy New Year!

  • I was just about to open that red envelope and Netflix myself into a coma. Now, I’m putting some peppy music on my Mp3 player and heading to the gym. Thanks for the inspiration, Fish, this year and every year.

  • I’ve got a few, some big, some small. Like washing my dishes within 24 hours of getting them dirty instead of letting them set on the counter for weeks (no dishwasher).

But the biggest one for me, coming off a bad relationship…is to be happy with myself and do the things I love, and be a better person.

Thanks for the inspiration Fish, I stumbled across your blog during my breakup and you made me laugh and realize that being single isn’t so bad and I deserved better. We all do. :)

  • my resolution is to follow the relationship resolutions that yoou wrote, i should have read those ages ago.

  • One of my favorite resolutions I came across while watching a kid’s television show- Do Stuff.

Godd or bad, silly or serious, just live life day to day, and give ourselves something to write about! Plus, as many smart readers have mentioned, it’s nice to have one you know you won’t want to break.

  • Dana

My resolution is to lose some weight. I am 23 lbs. overweight according to my ideal weight chart. I also want to not care what other people think of me, make some new friends and get a boyfriend.

  • Deirdre

I generally don’t do resolutions because I find it is better to address an issue when it comes up and not wait for an arbitrary day to change parts of my life. However, this year I am setting a few goals that won’t really make a difference in my life, but hopefully will be a fun process.

    1) I want to wear more hats! I think they are a fun way to dress up an outfit and whenever I think about wearing one out I get lazy. I will be daring and wear more hats because I look good in them.

    2) I want to find lingerie that I feel confident and comfortable in. Fabrics that make me feel sexy and special and I want to do it for me! And I will be willing to spend money on the more expensive stuff if that’s what it takes.

That’s it. Not exactly thrilling, but it should make for a fun year!
