Yesterday I spent my lunch break e-chatting with Glamour’s Girls in the Beauty Department blogger Beth Shapouri about my beauty routine. This makes me giggle. For one, I’m not exactly what you’d call glamorous, and my beauty routine? It’s a bit… haphazard. But, what I lack in fancy, I make up for in brand loyalty. I’m a die hard about the products I love and if a single one of these gets discontinued, there will be tears. Anyway, for a flighty trip down the beauty aisle, hop on over to the Glamour blogs to check out the interview!
Also, and I’m a bit late to the party on this one, but I’ve been simply LOVING this blog. I can’t decide if I wish we were friends or if I’m glad we were not. Such a friendship might end in a deathmatch over the love of His Crankiness, Dr. House, MD.
P.S. While we’re on the subject, got any beauty faves you want to pass on? Like, the super ultimate red lipstick that will not make me look like a psych ward escapee? Gimme!
Lovely interview, Fish! Congratulations!
And thanks for the tip….sugar and olive oil…. nice.
I love love love Air Kiss.
It happens to be a discontinued product right now. But I found it at http://www.amazon.com, still in the package, and I can still buy it!! Yea! It’s lotion for you face by the Pond’s company. It’s called Smooth Perfection, Complexion Perfecting Moisterizer. And boy is it! It feels so good on your clean face, that you feel like you want to smear it all over your body. Non-greasy or sticky or thick. I put it on every morning before I put on my make up. I can feel beautiful with this lotion on and no make up! I swear by the stuff. Most of the time I only use eye make up and lipstick, and this lotion, and then I’m done, out the door, and ready for anything and feeling great!
I was also late to the party but have completely fallen in love with the same blog.
My favorite beauty find is Stila eye shadow. (Kitten is my favorite shade) Holy smokealiscious. It goes on beautifully and stays on.
I read the Glamour Girls interview and was happy to see we share a love of “So Pink” by GAP. I’ve worn this for years and get compliments daily. I have about a two year supply stockpiled, but I’m in constant fear it will be discontinued and I’ll be forced to find something new.
Oh, Lynn, Kitten is a great shade. Lovely subtle pink tones. Ever try Sun–it’s more of a beige, but very similar. I like to switch them off.
Glad you guys are enjoying her interview over on Glamour.com! Heather was a great interview subject.
I also have a problem wearing lipstick. I always look like a mortician made me over when I put it on! Yuck. Most of the time I go without or just wear a gloss. I love the MAC and Lancome glosses. They stick to you. Also, creme eyeshadow is must more luxurious and stays on better and is not as overpowering as powder eyeshadow. I found some really pretty ones by Revlon. Combine the creme eyeshadow with liquid eyeliner and you can’t go wrong!
Fav product – Aquaphor. Use it on everything, but especially chapped lips.
Also, I love Bare Essentials. I was completely skeptical b/c, hello, the sell it on QVC? But I tried it and really love it. Their bronzer is the only thing that doesn’t make me look fake n bake, or like I’m trying to cover bruises. It also stays on all day, AND feels so much nicer in warm weather.
Dior mascaras are great.
And please, someone recommend a freakin’ red lipstick for pale people. Every lipstick I have is the same shade of rosey pink, and most of it is actually gloss. I keep reading how red lipstick is so classic and timeless, but for the life of me cannot find one that doesn’t scream hooch.
Great article!
I’m a bold eye, neutral lip girl and have just discovered Smashbox bionic mascara. Love how it looks on, but haven’t quite found a facewash strong enough to take it all off in one wash. Hello, morning.
Have fun trying new products!
I use olive oil on my hair every once in a while, for a super conditioner, but I’m going to have to try the sugar and oil face scrub!
I am loving Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Enhancer tinted moisturizer. I use it as foundation and feel like I have coverage without the evils of real foundation (for me, clogged pores along the jawline). Also good- Almay’s Smart Shade, goes on white, immediately matches your skin tone.
Hi, Fish.
I’m a makeup artist & the go-to red lipstick line for us in the industry is Julie Hewett. She created them after she did the movie Pearl Harbor & needed those good ’40′s reds. Coco Noir is the most versatile (although it is uber-pigmented so a little goes a long way – try putting on a little lip balm first to get a more sheer application). Her Jules lipstick is also a nice, less intimidating red.

Blast you, Kelley! I have just spent a better part of the last hour on Jules’ site and racked up $86 in my shopping cart. I’m just TWITCHING to press the ‘check out’ button…
Consider yourself lucky, Heather. Another one of their bloggers e-mailed me: “Hi! Nice to electronically ‘meet’ you! Would you please send me your most awkward sexual experience? I’d love to post it on my Glamour.com blog!” (As if.)
Wow. That seems a bit… over the line.
Don’t have a red lipstick, but Revlon makes an amazing lip GLOSS that really does look good on everyone (including me, lol). It’s called Super Lustrous and the shade is Cherries in the Snow.
I don’t have the nerve to wear red lipstick, but my favorite lipstick (which is available RIGHT NOW) is L’Oreal Color of Hope. Supports ovarian cancer research AND looks great on all skin tones. (The color also comes in a very nice gloss.)
Also, the interview was great.
I’m a product queen. My bathroom looks like the stock room of a department store. My faves though are Smashbox Primer (it makes foundation go on smooth and gives you “perfect skin”); Revlon ColorStay eyeliner (I wear contacts and its the only liner that stays on all day); and BareEscentuals foundation and bronzer (the secret is to use 1/4 of what you think you should use). I cannot live without Cherry ChapStick.
I always have luck with MAC Rage for a red lipstick that doesn’t throw me back to the 80′s.
Okay supa star!! Nice article. Keep Your Receipt is a hilarious blog. I don’t see how she walks around with all that funny in her head all day, 9/16 posts with Rue McClanahan took me over the edge!!
tarte makes these days of the week lipsticks and i have the monday which is a sheer bright red. it’s the only red that doesn’t make me look like a psycho.
I’m lovin’ Clinique’s Almost Lipstick, Black Honey, for not too much but just enough color and shine!
My favorite product is Clinique’s mascara primer. It makes a huge difference.
This is a great blog, I love to read it !
Totally off-topic, but didn’t know where else to ask. I was just wondering what happened with On the Road, if that’s not too intrusive to ask.
I’m a first time commenter but long time reader. Make-Up I guess will make any girl talk. Loved your interview – I too hate lipstick and feel like I’m playing dress up or something to that effect when I wear it, that’s why I never go out without my Lancome Juicy Tube (in melon)! All the colours are very subtle but make a huge impact to one’s overall appearance – perfect for dramatic eyes.
You can fight all you want. He’s my husband!
Products I can’t live without:
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion- keeps you from getting creases in your eyeshadow, and makes it stay on flawlessly all day and night.
Phyto hair products- I have fine hair, but a LOT of it, and it is hideously frizzy and wavy. It also tends to get dry in the brutal Chicago winter. Phytosesame shampoo, Phytojoba conditioning mask, and Phytodefrisant straightening balm make my hair super soft and shiny, and it straightens a lot easier with the balm. In the winter, I also use Phyto 7 hydrating cream on the ends, to keep the ends from getting dry.
Guinot facial products- I have extremely sensitive skin. (Seriously, I’m even allergic to Aveno calming products). I use Guinot Hydrallergic Serum as a daily moisturizer, as well as Guinot gentle facial cleanser, and my skin has never been in better condition.
NARS Flamenco Red. Sort of transparent red. perfect
fish,
need some advice. i recall you mentioning in a post that you don’t have great skin. yet in all the pictures i see of you, you’re skin looks clear and glowing.
now i have terrible skin. and just dont know how to conceal all the blemishes without looking like im walking around with a pancake of foundation on my face. especially in the sunlight. dim rooms are kinder
how do you do it?? any advice from fish or any one else would be VERY much appreciated.
fish,
i just wrote a post but deleted it accidently. anyway, this is important so writing it out again:
i remember you writing that you didn’t have great skin. but in all the pictues i’ve seen of you, you’re skin looks great — clear and glowing. how do you do it?? i’d really REALLY love to know because…
i have lousy skin. and have never known how to deal with it. i don’t seem to be able to cover all the blemishes without looking like im walking with a pancake on foundation over my face. especially in the sunlight.
and to make matters infinitely worse, i work in an office full of glaring, bright flourescent lights. and mirrors. so i can see how unflattering the harsh flashlights are to my poor skin. it’s stomach churning.
i need advice fish (and anybody else)!! real bad.
great product advice but a massive problem arises when you’ve to take it all off!!
i know it’s decadent but try Johnson’s Baby Oil. u wont BELIEVE the result. just slather it on top of all the makeup (esp the eye area and rub very gently here) and wipe off with a piece of cotton. way better than all the fancy-schmancy makeup removers and lotions.
skin feels so smooth, soft and clean. i swear by it. no raccoonish smears around the eyes in the morning!
Sorry, Fish, but you won’t be disappointed by Julie Hewett. And if you are it’s returnable. Did I mention the Cheekies? Peachie looks good on EVERYBODY…
Hey Fish!
I loovveee beauty blogs; I love sharing my own tips and finding new ones. I have the biggest problems with red lipstick too but I’ve already copied down every lipstick mentioned here to try out haha
I actually use Clean and Clear face wash with toner (it’s orange liquid in the bottle) and use Neutrogena Healthy Skin SPF 30 untinted for lotion.
After that I use MAC Select Sheer — this powder is the bestttt but such a pain because if I don’t wash it off at the end of the day I have HORRIBLE BREAKOUTS. I rarely use concealer but when I do I use Stila tiny gray tube. After that it’s Max Factor Lash perfection Prestige liquid liner and Nars blush
Hi Fish,
I’ve been reading for a while, but this is the first time I’m commenting Let me just say that I really love your blog; I’ve been reading for about 2 years now, and greatly enjoy how you write as well as the anecdotes you share. Thanks for having brightened up many gloomy days with your sense of humor!
Now I’ll confess that I delurked because this entry is particularly relevant to a question on social media that I’m trying to answer at the moment. I hope it’s okay? I’m taking a look at how the power of blogging has become such that companies (e.g. magazines like Glamour and its online counterpart!) want to actively engage bloggers to promote their products or services, or just to ask to be featured on the blogger’s site in order to reach certain audiences.
If you wouldn’t mind helping, could you please hop over to http://www.prsocialmedia.blogspot.com to answer 3 simple questions? 2 are multiple-choice, so it’ll really only take a second, and I’m definitely interested to know what your thoughts might be, being such a successful blogger yourself and having from time to time already reviewed or recommended certain products!
The one product I can’t live without is Merle Norman’s Luxiva Lasting Foundation. It has great coverage, goes on dry so that I don’t have to use powder, and does NOT melt off like liquid foundations (which is very important in FL’s heat and humidity). The only problem is that it’s so lasting that it doesn’t come off with soap and water. MN sells a cleanser that gets it off but I’ve found that Biore make up remover face cloths will do the trick.
Anything from the Dead Sea by Ahava. I had one sample nail done by an Israeli at a Brooklyn mall and bought the soap and crystals (exfoliant). Gave one of those soaps to Lisa Loeb. Said it might turn her to Chava Alberstein (Israeli folk singer). Maybe that’s why she’s dating someone now (did you hear the sound of a heart break?) That’s gratitude for you, Zsa Zsa.
i share your LOVE for ‘blog’ and i also enjoy your blogging as well…thank you for keeping me entertained and enlightened!
Chanel double rouge double intensite in ruby lite in the best red lipstick ever. It is long wear, and realy stays, but does not fry out or crack
