talk amongst yourselves

I had a fitful night’s sleep, finally waking five minutes after my alarm should have gone off (helps if you set it, I guess). Deliriously tired, I headed downstairs to let Jillian Michaels give me a good ass-kicking before work and when we got to the punching part I felt this funny little jolt of optimism. Like, “Oh, yeah, this is going to feel good.” I’m never just punching air — it’s usually some imaginary offender. Like, that lady who has absolutely no idea what a yield sign means. Or that ex-coworker of mine. The one who could not shut up. Ever. This morning, though, I wasn’t in need of vindication so much as eleveteen more hours of sleep so I punched with little enthusiasm.  And then I remembered.

Today is Sarah Brown day! If there was any perking up to be had, it was from knowing that this afternoon, I get to road-trip it up to Tulsa, Oklahoma and deliver a hug that’s two-and-a-half years in the making. We’re probably going to paint each other’s nails and watch Meet Me in St. Louis and eat things which are bad for us. And talk about boys.

Sarah and I went through some relationship doozies in New York. In fact, I met Sarah the same night I met one of the biggest relationship mistakes of my life. We were bonded from that very moment. But the same week that I met the Dork Lord, Sarah met her own love, moved to far, far away London to be with him and await a fiance visa (me, I’m just awaiting the fiance (ba-dump-bum!)) so there is much catching up to do.

So blah, blah, I’m excited about seeing Sarah but can we for one second talk about how BAD Taylor Swift’s performance was last night? Is that, you know, like a regular thing for her – the whole, not being able to sing thing? It was terrible. And up until that point, I have to admit I was pretty enamored of her. Gosh, she’s so cute. And nice. And ohmygod, totally tone deaf. I felt like I was watching a talent show at church and it felt really, really awkward.

Discuss.

I hope you and Sarah have an amazing day! So many things to talk about! What fun! Enjoy! :)

As for Taylor Swift… She’s a little cutie but I was dumbfounded when I heard it too! In fact, it was the topic of discussion as I walked into the office today.

I don’t believe it to be her “norm”… then again, she was singing with Stevie Nicks so, perhaps it was just nerves? I dunno…. Just glad when it was over ;) LOL.

    Anyway…Go have some fun today!!

I also thought she was off, but I wasn’t totally sure since I’m not like a singer. I guess it was bad though.

  • Didn’t watch the show but I heard there were quite a few bad performances last night. I don’t listen to Taylor so I am not sure if that is normal.

Have a fun trip to Tulsa! Meet Me in St Louis is the perfect girlfriends movie:)

  • Laura

I don’t think it is normal. She has been at a number of award shows and done a great job, I assume it was nerves or something. Who knows? Wasn’t a great grammy night all around.

  • Carrie

Oh my! Fish and Sarah Brown are going to be 2 hours away from me! Can I come? It’s my birthday! :)

Have fun with Sarah Brown talking about boys, nail painting and musical watching!

I am apparently the only person in the United States who didn’t watch the Grammy’s last night. Sounds like I missed some pretty crappy performances!

  • Staci

Yeah, it seemed as though she couldn’t hear what she needed to hear in order to stay in the right key. If you start out in the Key of Me, it can be really hard to wade your way out of it.

    Have fun today!!

oooh, crazy world. i know sarah brown. only just. i met her through 2 other people. i had no idea she moved to london. fun!

  • Jessica

Ok I’m glad that it’s not just me, but I really don’t think that she sings – she more talks to the melody. This may be sacrilege, but I think Miley Cyrus sings more than she does.

  • Andrea

Um, yeah, I watched Taylor Swift sing on SNL and it was pretty bad, so last night kind of guaranteed that I will never be buying tickets to see her live(she’s still completely adorable though!).

  • Hurry up and get here! We have tiny cheesecakes!

i’ve yet to see a good Taylor performance. And I own her albums, so it’s not that i don’t like her. She owes a lot to studio magic. She should start lipsyncing like other studio magic “singers.” Love her as a songwriter. Have fun with the friend!

I so agree that Taylor Swift’s performance was not good at all. I mean she is cute and all but she was justa singin her heart out and sounded awful!!! Stevie Nicks was awesome as ususal but even she couldn’t help her. I do have to say that Pink’s performance was the best one of the night. She is smokin hot.

I used to LOVE Taylor Swift–but over the last two years I am over her. This is not an abnormal performance. It was worse then usual, but she has horrible tune issues. I’ve said for well over a year now she needs to stick to song writing and leave the singing to those who can carry a tune. I will not be wasting anymore money on concerts for her. Once was enough.

  • I didn’t watch the Grammy’s last night, but your comments made me go look for the performance.

I have to say, I think Taylor was just having an off night. I’ve seen other performances from award shows and she’s done much better.

I’ve also seen her live and in person, she did much better.

I also think it might have been due to song selection. She is an amazing performer, so who knows what was up last night.

  • I tuned in just in time to catch Taylor’s performance. I think the problem was the key. She was singing a lot higher than she normally does. I’m an ok singer, but if I tried to sing Charlotte Church, i’d sound like a dying cat.

She could have also have had an off night. I’d be nervous singing with Stevie Nicks!

  • but how about Pink!? as if i could possibly need any more motivation to go to the gym… singing, spinning, and looking absolutely fabulous. amazing!

  • Holly, how do we know each other?

  • It’s normal. Taylor Swift has sounded like that any time I’ve been unfortunate enough to hear her sing. She’s a product.

A product that cannot sing or act and has no other discernable talent. It’s sad.

THANK YOUUUU for saying so about Taylor Swift. Not to be overly negative, but the accolades she is getting … the girl can write a catchy song, but she is just not a singer, whatsoever. It’s so frustrating to see her winning all of these different awards over other artists who are much more deserving, like Zac Brown Band for instance. It’s insane.

Pink, on the other hand … amazinggg!

  • Ok, totally unrelated to any of the topics in discussion, but I saw this and instantly thought of you (and Monica Gellar). It’s great in a totally inane you-must-just-not-GET-it way:

well i feel like a black sheep, but i have seen taylor swift in concert (my best friend and i took her little sister to see it this past october) and she was really really good. i think it must have been an off night for her, bc i swear the concert was great!

  • I heard that too but I remember wondering at the time if she just couldn’t hear herself in her own ear. Or has she been recording with auto-tune?

Who saw the Michael Buble performance on SNL? The man had waaaay too much energy– and was doing too much bad dancing– for such a down-tempo song. Either his mic was turned off and his voice was being picked up by the boom, or he just suddenly forgot how to sing.

I moved back to Tulsa from Austin about a year ago, and as much as I never would intrude on your friend visit…. I would love to meet the both of you someday. Have such a fun time!

Is it just me, or was that “ba-dump-bum” a Freudian slip about the not-being-fiancees yet? ;)

Have a great time and get some rest soon!!

  • Anonymous

A Freudian slip is accidental. I was purposefully making a joke about not being a fiancee. :)

  • Man, if I had capitalized on my tone deafness like Taylor Swift has, I wouldn’t be worried about which bills to pay with each paycheck.

Hope you had a wonderful time!

You are so right about Taylor Swift. It’s a shame, too, because she is a talented song-writer who pours her heart into her music. She also sounds like she is well-educated and classy. Her videos are pretty good, but when she is outside the studio (generally, at award shows), she sounds TERRIBLE. There are a lot of better country singers out there, and they were at the Grammys: Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum, Jennifer Nettles, etc.
