“I’m sorry to bother you, but are you Italian?”
I answered too quickly. “No. I mean, yes. A little bit here and there…”
The waitress laughed and shook her head. “I told them! My coworkers wanted me to come over here and get your autograph. They think you’re this singer…”
In that second, a name formed in my head, but I thought it can’t possibly! Maybe 3% of America knows who she is – an Italian pop singer whose Spanish albums I bought years ago in college to help learn the language.
“… Laura Pausini.”
The Dork Lord looked at me from across the table, perplexed, as I snorted a laugh. “I can’t believe you know Laura Pausini. But no, I’m not her.”
It didn’t seem to matter, though. The waitress made some more small talk and then disappeared into the kitchen. Dessert was free.
How awesome is that???
It *was* pretty cool. I had to call my brother, who is the ONLY other person I know who has any idea who she is. The reference was totally obscure, but I was so tickled, as the old folks say.
first of all I have to say that I found you blog some time last year while having nothing to do at work hehe and felt in love!!! with your writing I must say and then got obsessed so I have decided I would read it all haha… today I’m reading from November 8th 2006 and on ( I’m not a psycho I just have too much free time and love your blog) that being said…
I’m Mexican and live in Cancun and I had never paid attention but you do look like her A LOT!
just felt like saying… BTW Can I still get a Fish t-shirt!!! pretty please!!!!!
I lovvve Laura Pausini! Speaking of Spanish singing Italians-Tiziano? You should check him out if you haven’t already, his music is crazy beautiful. I’m using him to teach Spanish to my BFF right now. And so far she only speaks in these elaborately poetic, passionate phrases. Good for finding that hot latin lover, I guess.
I love Laura Pausini! I listened to her while I studied in Italy.
That’s awesome!
And FREE DESSERT! YUM!
too cool! i guess you just exude the famous vibes!!! i mean, you ARE a famous writer and world traveler… at least in my book!
tell the boy to get used to the paparazzi
I’m sorry, but you totally ARE a small time celebrity, as far as the interwebs are concerned.
How totally random yet completely awesome. Nothing like free dessert to make your day.
I didn’t know who Laura Pausini was, so I looked her up on google images. And then I looked YOU up on Google images which sounds terribly creepy but I wanted to see if there was something other than your headshot that I could compare her to.
I really don’t think you’re the naked woman, but I thought you might want to know you share your name with someone who doesn’t have anything to…. hide? Cover up? Wear?
Go ahead. Try it.
