archives! get yer archives!

The archives are back! Thanks to my friend Brooke, the nearly two thousand  archived entries have been uploaded and are ready to rock and roll.

We did not import the comments. I know. I went back and forth on this, but the file that iVillage sent over was unformed – meaning, it sure was all my posts and comments, but only very literally (I’ve been told it’s kinda like gettin’ the middle finger, only XML style). Importing the comments – because of sheer number and amount of data (there were thirty seven thousand, four hundred and something comments) – would have proven to be a Herculean task and I wasn’t about to put a friend through that frustration. I can’t afford to keep him on payroll, you see.  Anyway, let’s look at is as a clean slate. A fresh start! You know, that silver lining stuff.

I have lots of formatting to fix. I should be done in roughly a year. Yeah, no, I’m not kidding. Should be fun!

I need to recreate the “Favorites.” Did you have a favorite post? Tell me what it was and I’ll try to get that list up in the sidebar again. If you can’t find what you’re looking for (I’ll try to add the search box tonight I added a search box which should be pretty useful), give me a few key words and I’ll track it down!

Ready? Break!

I’m so glad I found your blog! I have followed you at ivillage for a long time and I kept clicking on the old link only to find some health page (I suppose I thought you’d miraculously appear even after weeks!). Finally, like a real smartie I googled you. Sorry I’m slow, but I’m here! Not that you would have noticed if I wasn’t, but I thought I’d wave anyway!

I’m sorry – I didn’t mean to slink off! I’m happy to see you back. :)

Oooh, can I just say “ditto!”? I kept going back to iVillage looking for you, too – glad I found you again, cos I love your blog!

  • Lawyerchik

YAY for archives!! :) My favorite was and remains: getting over, under and through, circa December 2003. There are others, but that is still my favorite.

I’ve written so much over the years, I had to go back and read that to refresh my memory. So. Many. Feelings. associated with that post and the memories it evokes. The funny thing is, though, for the most part, it makes me think of Sarah Brown, who rescued me from that scene and took me to Brooklyn to sleep on her couch, and less about the guy who made the rescuing necessary.

Actually, when I first read that post, I was experiencing byproducts of someone’s prerogative, and now, some 7 years later, here it goes again! (Different contexts, but still similar sequences.) The way you wrote about that experience helped me reframe my emotional responses to both events, and it helped me become a stronger person. Thank you again!!

Azure (and something) I love that one. I can’t recall the specific name but it had Azure in it. Great post. Add that one :)

  • Of your more recent ones, because your old favourites list hadn’t been updated in a while, the post your wrote about wanting to be engaged really struck a cord with so many people, including me. I’d love for it to be included – so honest, true and very you.

It took me a few weeks to locate you again, too, and I missed you! Glad to have a new shortcut to your special brand of humor on my desktop!

  • Calico

The favorite that comes to mind was the “Bet you didn’t know…” post.

Love the new site as much as the original and waaaay more than IVillage.

Neverland is my absolute favorite. Although, quite possibly because it is a story I could relate to. The writing, I found, was just beautiful.

I’ve been following since 2002. Bought the t-shirts. Love the blog. Consider you my friend, even though we have never met. Creepy? A little, but it is the nature of the internet, i suppose. I’m happy you are free from iVillage and love the new blog layout.

One of my favs from years past is the one with the break up note. ” It is not in my character to be cruel, or even careless with people, but I slip. Because I’m human and totally, wretchedly flawed.” oooh, so brilliantly written. :)

Last comment on this post – I promise! – but….

When all of the favorites are in, those might make a good book, y’know…. :)

  • ANna

Ooooh, I agree – the Azure one. And the one about your father and mourning, Fish. That one said everything I could not accurately express myself about my mother. And “Girl, you’ll be a woman”.
(I have to agree with lawyerchik1 – these are too good not to be published… :) )

I have a favorite list bookmarked/saved at home that I’ll have to look up. But in the interim, if it would be possible to add in the links to the correct blogs for the “How We Met” post, that would be all kinds of awesome. They’re diverting to iVillage right now, and I never want to visit that site again.

So glad to have you back!

    • thisfish

Done and done. Phew! That took a lot of re-linkin’! Bet I have a lot more of that to do, too.

      • T. Keyser

You are such a doll to do that! Thank you! I had just started reading through all the archives when the iSuck fiasco happened. I’m still looking for the list I had of favorites. But now I can find *new* favorites. Again, so very glad to have you back!

  • lori

i agree with calico about the “bet you didn’t know” post and genki’s suggestion about wanting to get engaged.
in addition there was 1 post about the 5 (i think it was 5) things you’ve learned from men, and 1 post about the 5 things you’ve learned from women. also, there was a post from 7/28/2005. i admit i read this every once in a while at work when i’m having a bad day.
    thanks, fish.

If you want help with the comments, my offer still stands. Just let me know what kind of import options you have available (I seem to recall you mentioning access to WP’s XML importer, which seems to be a reasonable-ish format) and send a sample of the data (or all of it if it compresses to something reasonable or can be uploaded somewhere). Oh, and what form you’d like the program to take: a python script would probably be easy, but if you’d prefer something else (perl script, Windows executable, linux executable, …) just say the word.

Penis is magic. I still trot that one out for countless girlfriends puzzled by stupid boys. Love love love.

    Also, he said things.

P.S. killer choice of wedding date – it’ll be my 27th birthday :-)

    Hi Heather,

First let me tell you wonderful I think your writing is and how much I enjoy reading your blog. I’ve been reading for years and have sent it to many friends who feel the same way.

One of my personal favorite entries was one called “a fistful of worms”, can you point me to the month/year that was written please?

  • Deeanna

    Hi Fish!

Love the new site!! My favorite post was “He Said Things”. I don’t remember the timeframe of it, but went back to the link quite often.

And I am really appreciating your posts recently on wedding stuff. I’m getting married in Sept and am in the same sort of financial boat (more like a dingy with lots of dry rot, but I digress).

    Thanks for being you!

  • Teak

    Hi Fish,

I do not have a favorite per se. I have followed you for a long time, and as you have gone through stuff, I have changed myself, and hence the blogs that hit the deepest chord have also changed. But the writing remains great, so keep it up.

However, thinking back on your old entries, and as wedding plans are a current thread, I recall one from the mid 2000s when you went to a wedding with J. The experience did not leave you anxious to get hitched soon, but did leave you determined to have a chocolate fountain whenever you did. So – no need to link to that old post, but it brings up the question: have you grown past that commitment (chocolate fountains are so 2003), or has flowing chocolate remained a constant for you (chocolate is forever)?

Someone else said it before, but I second it. “Girl, you’ll be a woman” spoke to me when I was going through a tough transitional phase.
