doing good down under

Yesterday, I got a message on Facebook from Clare, a reader from Australia, about the recent flooding in Queensland and the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Yasi. The storm left 170,000 homes without power which may take weeks to restore. It’s a disaster not unlike our own Hurricane Ike.

I’m not always as aware as I should be about what’s going on outside of my own small, selfish bubble and that’s something I’m trying to change. After reading about the hardships of our friends in Queensland, I have decided to donate January’s charity set-aside to aid in the recovery. I figure it’s a cause that covers children, animals and health and even if it’s no fancy celeb million dollar telethon, it’s something.

For information on how you can help, including ways to make international donations, please visit Queensland’s disaster relief site.

Thank you so very much, fish. Everyone seems to have made it through with no lives lost – we even had three babies born in the middle of the cyclone! In the last few weeks Australia’s community spirit has really shone, and it’s wonderful to know that this extends across the globe. Thank you again!

Meanwhile, our thoughts are with those in the US dealing with the snow… mother nature is having an angry, angry month.

  • It was scary reading about snakes and crocodiles in people’s houses.

Wow, fish. That is really lovely of you.

Here we are in Melbourne complaining about what the humidity is doing to our hair and yet the affect is nothing in comparison.

We’ve been watching in horror at the devastation caused by such insane weather patterns. Every work casual dress day, morning tea, etc donation drive counts!

What a great cause! I feel for those folks – Australia is filled with so much wide expansiveness. Fixing electricity problems has to be difficult, and going without electricity is NOT easy.

Thanks fish. My hometown is Brisbane and this post is very comforting. It’s like receiving a warm hug to know that people on the other side of the world are thinking of Queensland during this awful time.
