the great move of 2004

Let's get this out of the way first:

During the move, Kitten got spooked and took off through the open door. I had to move without her. She has not been found. It has been unbelievably hard and I don't want to talk about it, because I will cry and that really fucks with my mascara**.

Moving on. Literally.

The move was one complication after another. And if you learn anything from this post, it must be NEVER USE U-HAUL. EVER. Promise me you will support my boycott. Go on. Promise. Good, now we can continue.

The Ways Uhaul Made My Life Hell

1. After promising a local pick-up location, they fucked up and J and I had to drive an hour on a rural route to Middle of Nowhere, MA to get my truck.

2. After promising that the office in Middle of Nowhere, MA opened at 7:00, J and I woke at 5:30 to be on the road before 6:00, arriving at 7:00 to find they did not open until 8:00.

3. After leaving my house (we had gotten THREE houses away) when the rear tire of the truck blew, it took U-Haul TWO and a HALF HOURS to come fix it. Meanwhile, I am paying movers in New York City $100 an hour to sit in front of my apartment doing nothing.

4. After telling me I could drop my truck off at 102nd and Lex, U-Haul further screws me over when the man at said location refuses to accept it. We ended up at 127th and Park, pissed as hell.

The Ways My Friends Made it all Better

1. The Search Team (five of my good pals) scoured my neighborhood for over an hour looking for Kitten. They put up posters. They let me sit on my porch and sob like a six year old and did not make fun of me.

2. J and his girlfriend accompanied me to NYC and stayed up ALL night unpacking my stuff. J put up curtains. Girlfriend made my bed. They disappeared for a half hour and returned with lightbulbs, Tilex, toilet paper and a bouquet of flowers. Everything a girl needs for a new apartment. They made me laugh, most importantly.

3. Ari and Krissa both made appearances yesterday. One for shoe shopping and one for beer, take-out and some girl time in the new apartment. All all before the Alone in New Apartment Melancholy could really take full effect.

And thus went the Great Move of 2004.

** I saw The Incredible Journey when I was a kid. Though you'll never hear me say it, I'm still holding out for a Disney ending.

Have you found Kitten yet?

Posted by: Kim at April 5, 2004 09:45 AM

Oh, no, Fish! I'm so, so sorry - I can't begin to tell you how much. Hopefully she'll turn up at some kind soul's place soon.

Posted by: Lisa at April 5, 2004 09:51 AM

Oh Fish!
She'll come home don't worry. Roommate will surely keep an eye out. Stay positive!

Posted by: Iferlynn at April 5, 2004 09:52 AM

YAY that you are in NYC!
Oh NOOOOOOOO about kitten! I can't believe it! That has to be one of the most heart-wrenching things that could have happened. I'm really sorry.

Looking forward to seeing you! Things will get better, I promise!

Posted by: Joe CuttheShit at April 5, 2004 10:00 AM

Oh no! Kitten will come home to J eventually. I just know it.

Posted by: mingaling at April 5, 2004 10:49 AM

I'm sending up prayers (chants, rune readings) to Bast, Egyptian goddess of cats, to send kitten home to roommate, and then you'll get her next weekend. She WILL turn up!!!

Posted by: Kim at April 5, 2004 11:25 AM

I'm sure kitten will come home to your roommate who will reunite her with you. Kitten is just scared, but she'll come back.

I'm thinking happy thoughts for you.

i'm so sorry about Kitten!

oh, and fuck uhaul.

Posted by: julia at April 5, 2004 12:10 PM

I used U-Haul to move from TN to Oklahoma, shouldn't be a suprise to you that it broke down in Arkansas, of course it was in BFE (Bum-F'ing Egypt). So we waited an hour and I had to be there that night and U-haul is about like cable, we will get there on our schedule not yours! So I unhook the Honda and drive by myself for 5 hours. Took them over 3 hours to come replace a belt on their POS (piece of shat) truck.

Anyway I am terribly saddened by kitten being gone. I know she will come home. Be strong in the big apple. Just know that there are more people in 1 square mile of NYC than live in my whole town. ha ha

I'm ridiculously torn up about you losing RK...is she microchipped? They seem to be doing that to almost every kitty these days...make sure you call and change your address with wherever you got Kitten, so if she's found and scanned, they can get her back home to you!

Posted by: Anne at April 5, 2004 12:16 PM

oh my god I have had the SAME kind of problems with U-haul in the past.
THEY suck so bad.

Posted by: Another Pam at April 5, 2004 12:20 PM

really, fish ... i'm with you on uhaul. it was cheaper for me to hire a moving company than to drive my shiznit to oregon.

sorry about the cat. hang in there.

Posted by: kasey at April 5, 2004 12:53 PM

All good thoughts for the return of RK.

U-Haul ("Adventures in Moving") is evil. Here's proof.

Posted by: shelley at April 5, 2004 01:10 PM

One great way I have found to find an escaped kitty is to go through the neighborhood at night with a flashlight...shine it under stuff, stairs bushes etc...and their eyes will often shine back at you and give them away...usually a scared cat will not go far...often they will hole up just a few doors away. Good Luck and I know how you feel.

Posted by: mitch at April 5, 2004 01:16 PM

I know you have probably heard enough on this subject, but I wanted to add that my cat has actually escaped many times and always made it back in perfect condition. The first few times I FREAKED OUT. (One of them was when I was away in Russia and received an email from a roommate telling me about it, that time I *really* freaked out.) But in the end, I would stand outside and call to her a couple times a day and she would eventually come back.

You should have your old roommate go out and call for her. I bet she'll come back.

Posted by: jennn at April 5, 2004 01:36 PM

Kitten will return. You can be totally sure that your old roomie and great neighbor will be on the lookout for her.

Posted by: bond girl at April 5, 2004 01:41 PM

i am sufficiently convinced and will support the boycott of U Haul.

Posted by: amber at April 5, 2004 01:54 PM

I'm sorry about your kitty!!

I'm not only banning U-haul because they are evil, but I had a similar experience with Ryder Truck. Bastards.

Posted by: jen at April 5, 2004 01:59 PM

I'm so sorry about Kitten. You have great friends, and they'll be looking out for your dearest.

U-Haul charged at least three times as much to move out of NY than it would have been to move to NY (from Atlanta). Even the U-Haul guy who accepted our truck in Atlanta was amazed. What was even scarier is that they were the cheapest among the other diy-rentals I'd checked out.

Posted by: LadyCrumpet at April 5, 2004 03:05 PM

U-Haul is notorious for screwing their customers. A reservation means nothing -- they don't care whether or not a given piece of equipment will be within two hundred miles of your selected pick-up location when they accept your reservation. All they're doing is giving you the impression that a truck is reserved so you won't call a competing truck rental agency. Their equipment is so poorly maintained that it's often dangerous. I stay well away from U-Haul trucks on the highway; the combination of inexperienced drives and unsafe equipment is just too volatile.

Loads of horror stories can be found by googling U-Haul Sucks.

Sending you good voodoo vibes on kitty...she's looking for you too...I can feel it...

Posted by: Brian, the 646 Guy at April 5, 2004 04:47 PM

I ended up arriving at my apartment with my U-Haul at 4 am the morning after I was supposed to have arrived, after driving two hours just to get the damned thing. Go Budget, I used them at a local dealer the next time I moved and they have REAL reservations. They also said that U-Haul is nothing but good for their business.

As for the kitten, I will remark that my cat disappeared for three days once. I walked around the neighborhood for a few days, shaking the cat food box and calling his name, and jingling his favorite toy. After the third try, he arrived at home dirty and scratched, but happily mewing at the door. Treat containers work well, too.

i would like to cast another stone into the "fuck u-haul, no seriously" pile. i will only further observe that, if you have to take a one-way truck to *canada*, it makes everything worse. let's just say i was ready to beat someone to death with a kilometer.

Posted by: bryan at April 5, 2004 07:28 PM

sending good vibes to both you and Kitten, in hopes all works out.
and sending big ol' Cannuck hugs.

Posted by: munkeybrainz at April 5, 2004 07:34 PM

I'm so sorry about Kitten! She will miss you and come looking - and your friends will watch out for her and let you know when she shows up!!!

Hang in there, fish!!

(from a sympathetic lurker)

Fish, long time lurker first time poster.

I am sooooo sorry to hear about your Kitten running off like that. I my self have two cats and love them dearly. I am always worried they will run away. I truely hope that your kitten is found. Keep up hope.

My cat did that. She returned a few hours later.. Hope your RK turns up safe and sound.

Posted by: Cristina at April 5, 2004 08:55 PM

My wife and I used U-Haul to move her from Wichita to Minnesota a few years back. We had one of those "Smooth Ride" cabs.

By the time we reached Kansas City, we wanted to kill the U-Haul guys. By the end of the trip, I had invented a whole new ad campaign for U-Haul, based around the phrase, "At U-Haul, We Re-define Smooth."

As to the kitty...chances are that you'll be reunited. Every cat that I have ever owned has gotten out only to come back later dirty, cranky, yet happy to see the family.

Why just today, my own Action Kitty took a jaunt outside, only to hide under the porch for a while and cry until she was rescued.

Posted by: Mike Sawin at April 6, 2004 03:13 AM

Fishy,

We are sending good thoughts to Kitty, so she will realize the error of her scaredy-cat ways and come back to Roommate. Best of luck in NYC. You are far braver than I.

I'm so sorry about RK, so very very sorry. I know she'll come home and will get to you ASAP.

I will be needing moving services soon, and I will be boycotting U-Haul

Posted by: DF at April 6, 2004 10:30 PM

I hope Kitten returns soon! I don't know what I would do if my kitty escaped! I'll be thinking about you and Kitten both until her safe return!!!

Posted by: Mandy at April 7, 2004 12:22 PM

My new-ish kitty disappeared from my parents' house (the first night!) where she was staying while I was out of town for a week...she was missing that whole week, and another week after we got home, but she turned up at the doorstep after having taken her time to roam around and get lots of sex.

Mind you, this may be the dumbest kitty in the world, and she found her way back to a house that wasn't even hers. Don't give up hope. I'm pulling for you.

Hi fish. New reader here.

Reading your posts has almost made me cry. I have lost 2 beloved pets. One through the carelessness of my ex-SIL, who opened the door to our house and my sweet Jacqui ran away when presented with the chance. We had just moved to Oklahoma (in 1993) and we hadn't let her outside yet. I never could find her. And this after my SIL kept reminding everyone in our house not to let her cat out of the house b/c he was defenseless and missing one leg. We asked the same of her, but she was thoughtless. Bye Jacqui.

The second time, I lost my kitten, Haylee. We were once again moving back to Oklahoma (in 1999) and had stopped at a rest area. One of my children had opened the car door before I could place her in her carrier (she hated being penned up). And she was out like a shot, across the interstate and in some trees. My dad ran across and looked and we all called, but she never came back.

It is the most awful feeling to lose a pet you have loved. They love without question. While you are hurting inside, remember that she has taken fond memories of you with her as well. Wherever she is. She might be wondering how to find you. I will keep checking in and hope/pray that your old roommate finds her or she returns to her 'home', looking for you.

btw... I hate uhaul. I also hate ryder! When we were moving from Washington St. to Kansas in 1997, we had a terrible experience with Ryder. They had to eventually send out an 18-wheeler to tow it over 100 miles to my parents home. They wouldn't even take it another 30 miles to our home. They all suck. Made me want to sell everything I moved. Alas, I cannot part with that which I have acquired in this bizarre life of mine. Moving in less than a month, but less than 20 miles away, so we'll be moving it all by ourselves (w/ a company truck!), so no growling, cursing, kicking, stomping, scratching, or biting. :D
