aw, honey, you baked.

“Oh crap! Fire!”

Quick like a bunny, the Dork Lord rushed in from the living room to blow out the already dying flames while I stood next to the oven being useless in an emergency situation. Laughing. Not my finest hour. But to be fair, it wasn’t a true emergency – I’d snapped the oven off, and the fire was contained to the cookie sheet. And besides, we have an arrangement: I cook, he cleans up. And if during cooking, I happen to get the yips and dump the cookies into the oven, touching the parchment paper to the heating coil and igniting a small fire, well, then the logical reaction falls under clean up. After his part was done, The Boy stood there shaking his head.

“What happened?”

“Yips.”

His eyebrows went up, but he didn’t challenge my diagnosis, being far more concerned with the cookie dough salvage operation going on in the bottom of the oven. I was pretty sure it was going to be one of those moments of grace that I’d never live down and be reminded of on a routine basis (like the Great Scrape of Oh-Nine). But once baking resumed and he’d had a mouthful or two of chocolate chip goodness, he forgot about the fire altogether. Me, I added a line item to my May budget for a fire extinguisher. I’m a danger to myself and others.

Apropos of nothing (except maybe fire), seriously, how friggin’ great is Firefly? We spent a healthy (or un) portion of the weekend burning through the Boy’s DVD set, and I’m experiencing a little bit of anxiety that there are only a dozen episodes. It’s like going to PetSmart on pet adoption day and spending just a little too much time getting attached to sixteen kittens you won’t be taking home. I mean, why god, why? The Hills is in its fortieth mind numbing season and brilliance like this only makes a handful of showings. I hate to be cliche, but the terrorists? They’re winning.

  • Hurray you’re watching it! Welcome to the Dork Side.

I set my stove on fire once trying to melt a glass jar candle that had melted and hardened over the wick during my move from NJ to AZ. Anyway, for some reason I sat the glass jar directly on top of the gas burner and then…wait for it…turned up the heat higher when it was taking too long. I had a millisecond of insight and stepped back just as the glass jar burst and three foot flames stretched towards the ceiling. I stood there for a good two minutes thinking about the merits of a fire extinguisher or at least baking soda and whether or not I should run over to my neighbor’s house to ask for a fire extinguisher or baking soda. Finally I ran into my bathroom, grabbed a towel and yodeling like Xena ran back into the kitchen and whacked the stove. Fire out. Apparently so was my brain.

  • Kitchen fire extinguisher: $9.99 at Lowes. :) I’ve burned through a couple of them (no pun intended).

Firefly is freaking awesome!! Now you must see the movie.

  • Do I get a point for identifying “Clueless” as the movie from which the title came, or will you all be quietly mouthing to yourselves “ghey”?

Firefly is fabulous! And is just plain tragic they canceled it. And Serenity was awesome too, but it didn’t do well enough in the theaters for a second move which is just crap. I was lucky enough to meet some of the cast at Dragon Con and honestly they are just as awesome in person. Genuinely nice to their fans

  • Robin

Firefly is in fact fantastic. And honestly, if it took it getting canceled at 13 episodes to get Serenity, then I’m happy it was canceled. Yes, Serenity was that good.

  • Firefly makes me happy and sad at the same time. I was a huge Buffy fan, was totally excited when Firefly came out, then Fox showed them in random order, we never could figure out what was going on and then it was over. Then we saw the movie (that we loved) and bought the boxed set of Firelfly which, when viewed in order, is genius. We’ve watched all of them several times. And we watch the movie all the time too. Great “We have three things from Netflix and don’t want to watch any of them” Friday nite fare. Plus I Heart Nathan Fillian and my husband Hearts the chick who plays Inara.

  • Ah, I loved Firefly. It was a brilliant first season and had the makings of a great show. Then they go scrap it. Shows like Hills, thankfully, I pretend do not exist. Still wish Firefly was on though. It drives me crazy every time I get to the end of those 12 episodes and there aren’t any more.

Serenity was very good. It’s only shortcoming – it ended. We need another Firefly sequel or prequel or something.

  • Bob

You definitely need to see Serenity.

  • Lynne

I loved Firefly….Nathan Fillion was yummy.

i’ll add my appreciation for Firefly.

i watched it when it was on Fox, then got the DVDs & Serenity. i’ve now loaned the show and movie to at least 1/2 a dozen people. each person promptly fell in love, as well, and wondered why they didn’t hear about the show when it originally aired. i would consider it a healthy addiction.

  • love the clueless reference.

love that you call your bf dork lord.

A few years back, I got a knock on the door from a 14 yr old neighbor who was frying and walked away from the stove, only to return and find the stove engulfed in flames. By the time she found someone who was home and had a fire extinguisher (me), the flames had reached the cabinets. As I walked in the door, the over-the-stove microwave blew up in front of me. I managed to put the fire out for a moment and then it reignited. Due to my son’s nagging, my then-husband had purchased two additional fire extinguishers for the basement and garage and with these, we managed to keep the entire house from burning down.

Moral of the story: EVERYONE should have a fire extinguisher on every level of their house!

I just finished watching Firefly and Serenity for the first time this weekend, and my heart is sad.

    Worth it though.

Oooh, isn’t my friend from Plano Senior High School, Alan Tudyk, just wonderful in Firefly??!! I can’t believe I used to know him. ;-)

  • I had to laugh because Boyfriend almost set the kitchen on fire at lunch today while cooking bacon on the gas stove. While putting one piece in the skillet the end fell over the edge and the grease started burning. So to fix it he picked up the other end of the piece with the tongs intending to put the whole thing in the frying pan. But he got the piece hanging straight up and down when he picked it up and all of the grease that WAS in the pan ran down the strip of bacon straight into the fire. Whoosh! (Don’t worry, no burns this time)

I loved Firefly and Serenity. That’s why I’m so happy for ABC’s new show Castle because basically ‘Mal’ is back but pretending to be a writer instead of a captain. A lot of the same attitude, though. Yeah!

    um….what exactly are ‘yips’?

I saw the movie first and thought it was excellent. Then I saw the series. And even though I recalled the movie didn’t realise which characters bit it. When I watched the movie again after the series I was DEVESTATED. I loved Wash and dammit we didn’t get to the bottom of the mystery surrounind Shepherd Book! Grrr.

  • Hey, did you know that XKCD (webcomic) is currently doing a mini-series (of sorts) based on Firefly and Nathan Fillion’s character? (Whom I adore, by the way). You’d probably get a kick out of it– you can see them here: http://xkcd.com/577/ and here: http://xkcd.com/578/

  • Grey Ashdene

What are the yips? Do they just happen? Are any of the rest of us in danger of getting them?

I could see how it would be dangerous, say when riding a motorcycle, or riding on the subway. :-)

    Hang in there,

    Grey

I feel the same way about Arrested Development. Way too brilliant to have only run for 3 seasons. I’m crossing my fingers that the movie happens.

  • Amy

Oh Firefly! I never watched it when it was on tv, either, but my god that show is amazing. And I understand your hesitation to finish it. I loaned my DVD set to a friend MONTHS ago and he refuses to finish it because he doesn’t want it to end. It’s just that good.

  • shieldvulf

The lesson I draw from this is that small house fires are always more riveting than big television.

    Even Amish In The City!

  • michael

I’m so glad you discovered Firefly! I too didn’t see it until after it was off-air, but I agree that it’s so amazing. I’ve watched it at a stretch several times & it just doesn’t get old. I also have to agree with some other posters that it has made me a Nathan Fillion fan.

I’ve been following your blog for years and I’ve never commented. However, a thought came to mind while I was reading this post and I figured there’s a first time for everything.

It makes me feel good that you’re so happy now with a really great guy. I think having gone through some of the unhappier bits of your dating chronology and seeing your happiness now helps me feel that I WILL get out of a sticky mess I’m going through currently and hopefully there will be a great guy for me too. :)

    And yes, Firefly is awesomeness.

  • Megan

Yes– Firefly certainly exemplifies the creative genius that is Joss Whedon. After the series you can always watch the movie. And then rinse and repeat. Dollhouse is good too so if you wanted to move on in the oeuvre I’d recommend that.

  • lawyerchik1

“Yips?” Not sure what that is but maybe I missed something….

About the fire part, three words: “baking soda” and “lid.” Fire cannot survive without oxygen and fuel. Take away the oxygen and it dies.

I’m glad that you and the Boy are still getting along. :) Question: how will you write “This Fish” if this Boy thing becomes permanent? ;)

  • Anonymous

I say, What is in a name? Do I stop being entertaining when I’m hitched? God, I hope not.

    Ask Wikipedia about yips. :)

  • Leslie-Lu

Firefly was awesome! I blame Fox for the majority of it’s early demise. Showing episodes out of order, and changing the time slot left and right. Boo!

Please tell me you are watching Joss Whedon’s new show Dollhouse?

  • I have a dork lord too, and he also introduced me to firefly. :)

Lost rack of you about a year ago, as I was busy getting married to the biggest dork I’d ever dated, after 8 months of dating. We’ve been through Battlestar & Firefly & I love every minute. Just getting caught bakc up — glad to see you’ve found your Dork, they’re the best additions to any ladie’s accessory collection, I think. GL!!! ps: watch Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, if you haven’t already.
