I’ll be honest: Microdermabrasion was kind of uncomfortable.
But not like when your dentist tells you, “This is going to be uncomfortable,” and then it hurts so intensely that you want to get all Phillip Seymour Hoffman, MI:III on him and kill his loved ones while he watches. Not at all. Like one commenter suggested, it really did feel like a cat licking my face. But then, that’s why I don’t let my cat lick my face. Because it’s uncomfortable. And not to mention, germy.
I know, I know. I’m cold and unfeeling.
Anyway, a few minutes before Elizabeth was to start the procedure, I got a little bit nervous. Actually, a lot nervous. Having read and signed the disclaimer, my mind suddenly filled with visions of a red, welty-faced me being asked to sit out of my brother’s wedding photos. The family shame. The Boo Radley of the Hunter clan.
I had a wee panic attack.
“Um, I know the form says that my skin could be red for a few weeks, but how long does it normally last?”
“Not long,” she said, shrugging. “It will probably be gone before you leave here. That is, if it gets red at all.”
I wanted to believe her. So I laid back and let the cat-licking begin. When I got home, I dropped my bags by the front door and headed and straight for the bathroom mirror to check out the damage.
Of which there was none. Not a single blotch.
Over the next few days, I waited for the “worse before its better” phase – like I had experienced with the glycolic peel. And it never came. For the last week now I’ve had clear, glowy skin without the least bit of irritation. So there! And it’s not just how it looks that I’m in love with. It feels amazing, too.
So, either now I am an addict or a believer. I don’t care which as long as it comes with freakin’ awesome skin.
Oh! And while I was at SilkSkin for my microgerbilraisin (I have Biscuit and his friend Rachel to thank for the new word) I also go hooked up with one of these. You know the Sonicare toothbrush? Well, it’s like that. Only for your face. It pulses and spins and cleans your face better, supposedly, than you can. Frankly, I thought she might have been overselling it a bit when she talked about how great it was. It’s a toothbrush for your face. Whoopity do.
Well, whoopity-do, consider me over-sold!
I don’t know if it’s the brush itself or in combination with the microderm, but every morning and night, my skin feels a-mazing. I can’t help but get this nerdy little feeling of excitement when it’s time to wash my face. Like it’s the most thrilling part of my day. Eh, maybe it is. But is that so wrong? The outcome totally justifies the anticipation. Every single time.
How many things can you say that about, ladies? Hmmm?
That’s what I thought.

You got all italicized on us.
Fixed! Thanks!
I know exactly what you mean about the panic attack – I had laser hair removal done and I was terrified of being blinded or having a permanent burn scar that would be more noticeable than the hair ever was, but everything turned out fine. How is your new job?
Glad that hear that you dont have to be the ‘red faced stepchild’ asked to sit out of the pictures
Hope you’re feeling better too!
I’m so excited now. I have always had bad skin (oily, large pores, etc) anyway, I have heard so much about “Microgerblraisn”, but now I am sold. I will have to look into getting one of those face wash thingys, but I’m sure it helps to get the real deal first. Thanks fish!!!! Keep glowing!
Ha! Microgerbilraisin might be the best word ever.
I am intrigued by the Clairsonic. I already take an inordinate amount of joy in brushing my teeth… adding that could make daily hygiene the best thing ever.
HOLY CRAP! $200 on something to wash your face?
I’m sure Mr. zzzzzuh likes the way your skin feels too
I’ve been coveting the Clarisonic brush for a while now, but haven’t been able to fully justify the cost. Does it really make that big a difference? If so, I’m sold…
Hey, It’s only Mr. Zzzzzuh if you’re nasty!
Silk Skin is amazing! I love that place. I had the microderm alternating with the glycolic peel for 3 treatments each… honestly my skin has never ever been better. I also decided to get laser hair removal from my legs… AWESOME! I bring all my friends there now, Elizabeth is seriously a life saver.
That place sounds amazing. I wish I lived in NY!
Please fill us in if youever go for the LASER hair removal. Or of another poster would…. I’ve been considering it for ages!!
DL… if u are considering Laser Hair Removal Silk Skin’s the place… I have done my research (check their citysearch ranking… 9.7) and they have the best laser in the industry.
Washing your face is the high point of your day? On behalf of men around the world, I apologize. We have failed you, and rather badly at that.
I think DL was perhaps more curious about the overall process/results.
Michael, apology accepted. Now, step it up!
I did underarms at Silk Skin. it is awesome to not shave them… I’m going to do my legs next
Way Way Way TMI on hair removal. Hygene good, Overzealousness is not healthy. Now, back to the ZaaZaaZuh dude and unexplained toys with batteries.
Upstate Male, are you an idiot or do you just not actually read the posts before you comment?
I think the “vibrating toy” is the brush she linked to, and pretty sure microderm isn’t about hair removal. But then, I’m a guy. What do I know?
When you first started talking about this stuff, I was inspired to look at those at home kits. I read the reviews. And then I took the cheap way out and tried one by Ponds.
I’ve gotta say…I LOVE it. My skin feels so smooth…smoother than I’ve ever felt it. And it is clearer than it’s ever been. This is after 2 weeks of use. Thanks for the inspiration!
Yay, that sounds great for you! And, help, I have anxiety attacks before a facial. So no gerbilraisin for me.
Ok, Lame as it may be my daily skin care routine is deffenitely the highlight of my day. When else can I say I have been completely enthralled in a self indulging, calorie-free 5 minutes?
Thanks for the info on a good location, but, yes, I am also interested in the process/ aftereffects. I’ve heard some real horror stories (who knows, maybe they are urban legends), and that you have to go for multiple treatments (expensive!) and that some locations do not have the necessary medical equipment on hand in case of emergency…. But i’ll check out the Silk Skin place online.
Does the vibrating face brush feel like it’s tugging on your skin? I’m intrigued, but I fear it would pull on the delicate skin around my eyes.
Nope, doesn’t tug. But also, I don’t get all that close to my eye.
Thanks, Dear! Now, I know that it’s the glycolic peel (v the microderm) that makes me peel so (this time it was Day #3 when I looked like I was 80) (no, make that 55 – using the La Mer Concentrate prior/after really did help my skin to bounce back)….
How much do treatments like these cost anyway?
I’ve had microderm several times. Once or twice I’ve walked away a bit blotchy but a little Decleor Rose D’Orient oil cleared it up no time flat. Would like to try the glycolic…but am afraid.
I had a panic attack a few weeks ago when I went in for a Brazilian Sugaring. I came out with just a bikini though. How did you get hooked up with the Clairsonic?! I want one!

Maybe that would get me to wash my face, because I just can’t seem to commit to it!
yeah! I was the cat-tongue comment and feel so vindicated by you affirming it as such. I have gotten so many weird looks when I say that. I am not remotely a cat person but love the aftermath of microdermabrasion so much – they questions my enthusiasm! lol.
I am sure you are rosy and smooth and beautiful for the wedding.
Hi Lady,
Just wondering if you knew about Elamax.. it’s a numbing gel for the sking so microderms are much less ouchy.. It’s either Elemax or Elamax.. goooood stuff =D
No no no no no!!!! You aren’t SUPPOSED to be exfoliating every day! I know your skin feels great to touch after, but it dries the hell out of your skin to remove the skin that often. ONCE A WEEK to exfoliate and once a week a mask, and the rest of the time a cream cleanser. My skin cries for you.
My lord that’s a LOT of emoting over exfoliation. I’m sure you know everything there ever was to know about it, but my skin feels like a baby’s ass. So, don’t cry for me. The brush does not exfoliate. It’s very soft — softer than a wash cloth by far. And maybe a cream cleaser works for you, but hell if I’m putting that **** on my skin. Listen, it’s great that you have a nice regimen that makes your skin the pefectest skin ever, but what is good for the goose is not always good for the gander.
