a girl without her lists

I’ve been having a bit of a hard time transitioning back into post-holiday real life.

Not that Dallas is a magical fairyland or anything, but six days of mom food, napping, sisterly antics and time spent with old friends can make the daily city grind seem a bitâ€_ lackluster. And it can make a girl feel very, very lazy.

Take this morning, for instance. Ordinarily, I’m up by nine on Saturday morning, showered, dressed and downstairs at the deli for my coffee (skim milk, two equal), with a list of errands folded into my wallet. If you promise not to look at me funny, I’ll admit that most Saturdays, I have to invent some of my errands – even creating some of them in midtown so I’ll have to walk forty or so blocks and feel all the more proud of my accomplishment when I’m done. Look at me being so energetic and productive!

But not this morning.

“I’ve been sitting around in my robe all morning watching Pride and Prejudice,â€ù I confessed when Torrie called to solidify our let’s-have-tea-and-catch-up plans.

“You’re so odd.â€ù

“You have no idea.â€ù

I hadn’t even told her about the invented errands. But I figured I’d wait until a little further into our relationship before I let that one slip.

When I hung up a few minutes later, I thought about all the actual, non-invented things I had to get done before heading out to Brooklyn for tonight’s festivities: There’s a little black dress draped over the armchair that I (ever so gracefully) accessorized with a dirty martini. It smells much, much less like a hobo than you’d think, but it needs to get off to the dry cleaners. The fridge is empty. The mail caddy is full. There’s champagne to buy for New Year’s Eve, laundry toâ€_ launder, tubs to scrub and a yoga class to suffer through.

After all that thinking, I stood up, circled my bathrobe around tighter and slipped in disc two of Darcy.

It’s like someone took my obsessive/compulsive and switched it out with a double dose of laidback and lazy. And so long as it doesn’t last more than a few days, I don’t suppose I mind.

i hear ya clucking… i just returned from 8 days in the home land and by day three i was a lazy sack of crap. yesterday i had to muster the strength to go to work and really had a hard time making it through the day – and it was a half day! it’s noon thirty now. i am still in my pj’s. have considered going out in the world for nourishment and caffeine, but haven’t yet found the gumption to find clothes, shoes, much less a bra. looks like it’s an indoors day.

I know exactly how you feel. i am going through that same moment. Instead of the little black dress it a red. But have a Wonderful New Year.

Pride & Prejudice, Colin Firth, disc two – my absolute favorite!! Especially disc two because that’s when Elizabeth and Darcy sizzle. Colin Firth – big, BIG, sigh.

  • It’s now 1 PM and I’ve just finished working out. That is after getting up at 11 AM. I also just extended my ‘vacation’ for another day.

    mmmm, indolence.

You can NEVER have too much of Colin Firth! Errands can wait…

Colin Firth + Saturday morning + pajamas is what I call heaven. So glad to know other girls think so too!

  • My list of invented errands just keeps getting longer…the person I need to learn to say “no” to is me!

I’m really happy to read that you’re watching the old version of Pride and Prejudice…not that the new one isn’t great, but the multi-disc old one is just so much fun to watch!

I dont think you’re the least bit weird, at least you have to DVD version!

  • Was buy two SUPER cute dresses on the list?

Pride and Prejudice is the ultimate tonic for single women. Although I would say the scene where Darcy and Elizabeth meet at Pemberly is the best one for sizzle.

Every time I read that book it gives me hope that the smart single girl can get the interesting guy and not just the loser Mr. Collins type. As I’m typing this I’m a 39 divorced female hanging out with her parents and their AARP cards. I’m afraid too much vacation has left me mentally lazy and addicted to craigslist.

  • I always joke that my personality contains a very odd mixture of perfectionism and utter laziness. I have to get that 4.0, but I also have to study as little as possible while watching as many episodes of Grey’s Anatomy (or, yes, as much Darcy) that can fit in a day. Eh, it seems to work so far…I doubt it will for too many more years, though. Have a fun New Year’s!

Awesome site for all things Austen. They refer to ‘the look’ that Darcy gives Lizzy. Even I, in all my jaded relationship despondency, wish I had someone to look at me like that.

Actually it’s http://www.pemberley.com/ for the Jane Austen site. If you are a jane Austen addict, this is the site for you.

  • oh I agree, Reality will bite. After two weeks of sleeping-in until noon (what I call heaven)and enjoying my mom’s cooking, come January 2nd, I hope my alarm clock still works… and that I have the willpower to obey its 6am call. maybe I better set two alarms.

It’s CR that did that to you, makes you more relaxed, not in a hurry to get anything accomplished. That laidback sorta lifestyle.

  • I’ll admit that during my vacation last week I watched all 5 hours of that movie– and then I watched the good parts again. It is a good use of time.

Hmm.. that seems to fit many weekend mornings for me! I usually get around to doing all my errands around 4 Sunday afternoon At least you have the excuse. Enjoy it! ;)

*note to self, must watch Pride & Prejudice

  • Oooohhh…I just got that DVD version of Pride and Prejudice for Christmas…along with the hardback compilation of all of Jane Austen’s books.

Yeah, about the to-do lists…I didn’t even attempt once I figured out the equation of cozy fireplace + comfy loft TV room + Colin Firth = unbelievable laziness!
