dickin’ around with a horse

“… and watched a few hours of Little House on the Prairie.”

“Of course you did.”

“Come on! Don’t pretend you didn’t like it when you were a kid.”

“I think I watched it every week. And sometimes, if I’m flipping through the channels and it’s on, I’ll stop. Not if it’s the girls. But if Charles and Mr. Edwards are dickin’ around with a horse, or hunting or something, I’ll watch. Or, if Doc Baker is out on his rounds, and I want to see who’s sick.”

“You just said dickin’ around with a horse.”

“Yes, I did.”

“And you know Doc. Baker’s name.”

“Yeah.”

“And you were making fun of me?”

“That’s right.”

“Mmmm hmm.”

My favorite dress when I was a kid was one that looked like it came off the set of Little House on the Prairie. And everytime there was a part in school plays that called for period dressing, I fought to be dressed in the 1800s….

When I was about 6 years old..I would cry when that show went off.

We used to watch it EVERY Monday night. And make fun of my mom when she’d cry at the end. Yeah, now I cry at such things… and I still love the show.

OH, and I have the Little House cookbook. Seriously.

If I had room for cookin’ in my sad, sad little kitchen, I’d be all over that! Ma’s biscuits and stew? Yes please!

  • When I was a kid we tried to make the Little House maple candy — which is described in the book as maple sugar poured over snow.

    I wouldn’t recommend it.

I love Little House on the Prairie.

  • My mom bought me season two of Little House for Festivus, and I thought of you.

  • I tried calling my parents Ma and Pa once after a particularly gripping episode of Little House. It was not a big hit.

Yeah, we also tried to make the maple sugar candy! But instead of boiling maple sap over a stove for, oh, two hours, we headed outside with a bottle of Aunt Jemima. And then we were sad when it didn’t work.

  • I had the BIGGEST crush on Almanzo when I was little. I was sure that I was going to marry him. Now I think I might have needed glasses when I was young!

  • Heather- I watched little house once, but then I spontaneously burst into flames and awoke in the hospital with third degree burns. Now I only watch reruns of Star Trek. -Gregg

  • Not only do I ocassionaly enjoy a great episode of “Little House on the Prairie”, but there was a time when I was addicted to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books.

Favorite Episodes: When Mom got leg caught on rusty wagon piece and got sick, blizzard one where the kids were lost, and the one where the sheep had anthrax….no wonder my brother used to say “here come the waterworks” when my sis and I used to watch it

I loved the one where the kids got lost! Charles was the kind of father I wished I had…strong, manly, but also loving and kind. And Ma was a wonderful woman…strong, feminine, loving, and kind. Another favorite was when Laura ran away because the little baby boy died, and she thought Pa loved the boy more than her. Nice stuff.

  • oh man, over christmas i saw the movie they show on Hallmark at this time of year, where Laura and Manley are all grown up and married and some lady kidnaps their daughter.. you remember right? yeah, sat there all last saturday morning and watched it.
