Sarah Brown’s rules of vestment: No sweaters before October and no tights and boots before the day’s high temperature is in the 60′s.
Well, when I woke up this morning and weather.com told me it was only fifty-something degrees (with no intentions of reaching beyond seventy-nothing), I looked at Sir Hal, lounging in his sunny windowsill and said,
“Ooh, buddy! It is on!”
Then I scurried to the front closet where I dragged out a pair of knee-high boots. Then opaque tights from the top drawer, a wee black skirt from its plastic hanger and a crisp raspberry button-down still wrapped in department store tissue paper.
Hellooooo autumn!.
I love a turn in the seasons. Spring and fall have to be my favorites, mostly because of the implied mildness of them. Summer says sunburns and atrocious electricity bills. Winter says tight, dry skin and hunchbacked runs from shelter to shelter. Fall says so many things – all of them whimsically, nonchalantly and punctuated by things caught up in sudden, skirt-lifting breezes.
Because the whimsy of fall is so short-lived, I think I’m going to go for a walk. Right now. Work will be here when I get back. It always is. It will still be here waiting when winter arrives, its steamer trunk packed full for a long stay, when working seems the pleasing alternative to a six block walk in the elements. When any breeze that lifts your skirt is a cruel one.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
P.S.
As soon as I wrote the title of this post, I got this funny image in my head of hippies sitting cross-legged in a hazy, dark VW van. And it amused me. Not at all what I meant, but just as good. Or better. And now I find myself a little jealous that I never got to experience that kind of high in the sixties. What a love fest.

That is so right on. I’ve been counting down the days til I can bring out my boots from their summer retreat. Loooove my boots – all 20(ish) pairs of them….and Fall is the best. Always a little something special in the air. Hell, in CO it’s perfectly okay to wear boots in September when the snow start to fall. 10 inches last night. Mmmmm hmmmm. Crazy. I wore flip flops yesterday!
I’m with you on Fall and Spring being my faves.
I looove autumn- for sweaters, the crisp air, leaves, apple picking, the smells, Thanksgiving… everything about it- I LOVE FALL.
Here in Paris we’re experiencing an amazing Indian summer — and trust me, it’s a welcome break, because our August was not so pleasant. But then again, I could do without the misplaced humidity! I’m with you: I could do without the dead cold of winter, so I’m not in a hurry for the low temperatures to get here, but then again, I think I’m looking forward to breaking out the knee-high boots again!
(But keep those leggings and long sweather combinations AWAY FROM ME!)
I’m thinking that if most of this season’s fashion options look like those slim-fitting jeans you mentioned in a recent post, hopefully I’ll be saving more money than usual this fall! (as in, saving SOME money for a change!)
I love love love Fall. The turn of the leaves, the crispness in the air. Most of my romantic milestones took place in the fall. There’s an orchard I go to just south of Philadelphia, I remember going there as a child and those memories all come screaming back when I visit there. Which I still do. For the pies, and the petting zoo. Love it!
Oh, and by the way, I dont see to mind the occasional skirt lifting breezes
Fall is BY FAR My fave too!! All the good things happen when it’s Fall!! And…to be honest…I thought you were going to write about parents in VW busses getting stoned too…haha…
I love fall! The weather is great and good things always seem to happen. I’m spending this weekend pulling out all of my fall stuff. I’m so excited!
Here in Texas we’re enjoying a cold front, too. The high is only expected to be 94. Not the same, but still, oh, so refreshing!
I love fall, too! And I love sweaters and scarves and tights and corduroy and pumpkin spice lattes and crunchy leaves and all of that!
Oh, and I saw the offensive Gap ad you mentioned the other day… Audrey and AD/DC blasphemed in one go? That’s so messed up it’s almost admirable, Gap, almost..
my favorite part of fall are the leaves that have fallen to the ground. there is nothing that brings more pure and simple joy than scwunching through a huge pile of brightly colored leaves.
Austin- I hear ya. I love this 90 degree weather we are having! NOT! I want to go back to the mid west where we had 4 seasons a year. I dont think it will ever get cold again in Texas…
“Fall says so many things – all of them whimsically, nonchalantly and punctuated by things caught up in sudden, skirt-lifting breezes.”
That’s perfect. I’m quoting you on my next post.
We’re headed into our seventh consecutive month of 90+ degree weather…I am so OVER summer!
e. I am totally with you! Pumpkin spice lattes!
Ooh, I love fall, too! Our mid-Atlantic ones don’t quite rival my childhood New England ones, but since I got to break in my new cords, I’ll take it. I love how the brisk air wakes me up in the morning and it’s a good excuse to eat things like beef stew, chili, and shepherd’s pie. YUM.
I can’t wait for it to get cool here (SC) I just bought two pairs of boots from my favorite website (If fish says it’s ok, I’ll tell you where it is.
So I’m looking forward to wearing them. I will definitely try the pumpkin spice latte…..I love fall!
(From This Fish: Sure! Just make sure you link it with html so that the link doesn’t mess up the comment formatting, as they tend to do.)
Summer is my favorite season. I like the heat and the fact of not h aving to worry much about layers and jackets. Spring and Fall are too ambivalent for me, quite annoying actually. The breezes are too strong, you don’t know if it’s a cold or warm 60 degrees and Winter is the top of my **** list. Winter is unneccessary and evil lol.
I love fall. The summers here are so hot and the winters last forever. Fall is my favourite 6 weeks ever.
When I read the title I thought “I hope it’s about senior citizens.”
It is cooler here in Florida today too. Just standing in the less humid sun for 10 minutes at lunch was heaven. It is honestly amazing I made it back to work. I am proud you did too!
I’m with you, Autum is by far my favorite season. It’s stinks that it also seems to be the shortest one, or feels like it atleast.
Carmel Apple Cider from Starbucks…Here I come!!!!!
Fish……Whatever happened to the zzzzzzzzzah! man? You have left us hanging!!
(From This Fish: You know, for now, I’m keeping that to myself. And all the comments on all the other posts having nothing to do with it are getting sorta irritating.)
I got the same image in my head when I read the title! Glad it was about the arrival of Fall instead.
Speaking of changes and all things wonderful – how’s the break up with coffee going?
(From This Fish: Good! I haven’t had coffee in the afternoon since I wrote that post. Just one in the morning and I’m all set!)
aaaaaamen Fish! fall has got to be the best.
I am so in love with fall. If I wasn’t so opposed to change I would definately move someplace that it is fall all year long. Where would that be? Or is it only in my dreams? Winter is a close second.
Fall can make me happy like nothing else.
Fall is absolutely the best time of the year, no question.
Come to California and we can rent a van, go sit at the corner of Haight and Ashbury and hit people up for a joint. Fun!
I’m the same way… I love fall! If only there was actually fall in northern Florida. The leaves do turn a bit in November, though.
I’m so envious of everyone who gets to experience fall…
I have to admit that I miss the autumns of New England now that I’m in London…but we still get those cool breezes…warm afternoon following chill mornings…mmm…can’t wait for boot weather here!
I’ve always found autumn to be simultaneously depressing and optimistic. I love summer and autumn signals the end. But I, like you, love knee high boots. Plus I always associate autumn with the start of something new, probably a vestige from 16 years of schooling.
yes i love the change in seasons too!! all of them! i even love winter on certain clear dark nights on the UES. i had a good feeling on my walk to the train this morning… last day of summer, last day of 5775 or wahtever year it is… Happy Fall, Shana Tova!
I love the changing of the seasons. That is one of the few things Michigan has going for it, a lovely progression of varying temperatures and leaf colours. And lots and lots of yummy apples, donuts and cider to add to the experience.
I would probably piss Sarah Brown off today. It’s only September, yet here I am wearing tights and a corduroy skirt along with my sweater. It was a chilly 55 degrees this morning. I think that works in my defense.
Eh, you would probably not piss me off unless you stopped in front of me on the subway steps. My broad fashion proclamations are more for other people. My own personal style is more Hungover Substitute Teacher.
I can’t wait for ‘in the sixties’……….
