un-shopping

Today I went un-shopping.

Not familiar?

Un-shopping is when you (you, who have spent simply WAY too much money in the last few weeks) return items that are still living in their bags, attached to price tags, and taking up room on your already too small bedroom floor.

Maybe it was the shock of writing the rent check, but I had a heart-to-heart with myself over the matter and decided that no girl should buy things she doesn’t really even want, just as means of retail therapy. It’s an idea I’m going to try out for a while.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

  • I–having learned from my mother–buy everything on contingency. You go, you buy, and if you don’t like it, so what?

Of course, you have to be organized or more persuasive than I am…those receipts can go missing pretty damn easily.

Best of luck. Stay out of Bloomies!

  • v. proud of you ; ) I enjoy thirfting & half-priced book stores. I find it cures my need to forage just as well, & even satisfies me more knowing I’ve found something nearly new for way cheaper.

  • I went through a phase where I bought a new cd everytime I felt sad/depressed/anxious. It didn’t take long for me to start subconsciously working myself into angst-ridden states . . . so much good music to be had, you know. I finally made myself find an alternate means of therapy, but if you’re looking to build your music collection, this method is one great way to get started.

Paul- You’re taking shopping advice from YOUR mother??? She’s not exactly the most frugal person you know.

  • Oh, just freakin buy it already.

I’ve learned this: if you love it, and you don’t buy it, it goes away.

Snap It Up before someone else does!

Good on you, Fish. Retail therapy is false therapy. *Things* don’t make you happy, you do!

I’m going to have to return a suit tomorrow that I need and absolutely love, but can’t afford. It’s going to break my heart, I tell you…it’s so seldom that I find a good suit that fits.

  • I’ve had an attack of non-shopping recently. I’d like to say it’s because I walk into a store and think, “You know, I’m not going to buy into this consumerist mentality,” but really, it’s because I looks at stuff and think “You know, if I don’t buy this, think of how much money I’ll have to spend on shoes when I’m in Italy!”

  • Isn’t it easier to just get someone to buy stuff for you?

  • I say buy and never look back… you only live once!

I “un-shop” all the time. Retail therapy is great, but can often lead to buyer’s remorse a week later. I keep tags and receipts as long as possible.

Sometimes returning something you liked means having the funds once you find something you love.
