on deciding which is worse: a ten-day hangover or pleated pants

In case this comes up at some point, the offending wisdom tooth is still lodged in my jaw (until Thursday) and that is why I am maybe just the teensiest bit cranky. Or prone to bouts of weeping. I swear, I’m trying to keep it in check, but it’s like having a ten-day gin hangover. In my face. The antibiotic that the dentist promised would have me back to normal in a jiffy has done nothing but give me stomach issues (I won’t elaborate), the Vicodin made me spacey and gave me menopausal hot flashes but didn’t do a thing to take the edge off the pain. And so, kids, we’re at the part of the story where our heroine flies to Houston for a meeting, gets lost on campus finding the building and sits in her rental car and cries because even bad guys* don’t deserve to have a ten-day gin hangover in their faces.

It’s also the part of our story where our heroine sits at her desk and thinks, Hmmmm, heroin. Maybe that’s the ticket!

I finally sent a check off to the IRS on Friday. Wowee, does that have to be one of the more mixed emotion moments I have experienced in a while. Getting out from under The Man’s thumb? Awesome. I mean, that’s a really good feeing. But emptying my savings account? A little scary. The Dork Lord and I have been doing so well with our saving and our careful spending, but this weekend, we talked about me getting a second job. He’s back in school, which is a second job of its own, and I feel like even the few hours that I spend watching Bones or HGTV could really be better spent toward some financial security. Freelance writing gigs aren’t as easy to come by as they used to be, so I’m thinking maybe something like, Barnes & Noble. Heck, or Target Team Member. That has to come with a sweet little discount. Yeah, and khaki pants, but you know what they say about beggars and choosers.

I put my foot down when it comes to pleats, though.

* Except you, Kanye.

  • Certainly the pants must only be khaki right? I always credit Target with having a bit more style than pleats. I have a cute pair of cargo-type pants that are khaki. I don’t know why I mention this because you can’t have them. Maybe to give you hope?

Anyway… men find red sexy, so there’s that.

About Kanye, I think he already has a 10 day gin hangover in his face. Well, that WOULD explain his attitude, right? :)

Kudos on the Kanye comment. That was awful and I was wondering if anyone else felt as terrible as I did for poor Taylor. That girl is truly talented and pretty kick ass!! No dis to Beyonce but come on this girl is 17! She deserved to win without some arrogant ass ruining her moment. ]

  • Yes! Go for Barnes & Noble, I used to work there & constantly consider going back to pick up weekend shifts… be careful though! Employee discounts rock, but when you buy more product than take home pay (which is easy to do!) then you’re in more trouble than when you started! It’s amazing what little ‘finds’ you come across when putting stuff back on the shelves.

Fish, have you thought about babysitting? It might be a flexible way to earn more than you would at Target. Good luck!

  • Go for Barnes and Noble. That’s funny because once my parade of part-time jobs working at weddings in various capacities is over I was contemplating picking up a job at B&N. My only worry is being in such close capacity to all those books and how much I would actually save versus spend.

  • I work at Barnes and Noble….it’s a good job. It doesn’t pay as much as it should, but the atmosphere and people are great.

  • Sorry – I need to go back and check a few updates, but what do you mean HE’s back at school so YOU need to take a second job?

Hi Fish, I work full time and petsit, too. If you join a company you’ll make less per visit but get lots of referrals. Or insure yourself (few hundred a year?) and keep 100% of the profits. I love it and I make around $4000-$6000 a year just on weekends and holidays mostly. Not to mention getting to take care of darling kitties & pups. :) It’s an idea!

  • Sounds like a second job might be the ticket! I worked two jobs until I was about 29- I had the energy and needed the money. Banking doesn’t pay well in the beginning, even if you do have a college degree. It makes sense, especially since your beau is also gone.

  • Ugh, don’t even mention Kanye. He was an ass for what he did to Taylor Swift. Kudos to Beyonce for fixing it.

  • Teresa

awww, poor poor cita! I really hope you are feelin better soon! I worked at Mervyn’s Dept Store for awhile, the pay wasn’t so hot, but the benefits were awesome… and the discount went even on clearance items… and at their sister stores.

If I must make a choice between the two…

    Pleated Pants.

    Definitely.

As for the gin hangover in your face the only thing that took the edge off waiting for my root canal was 4 ibuprofen every 6 or so hours. Percocet didn’t do enough & made me nauseous & the Tylenol with codeine did absolutely nothing. Not good for your stomach lining but it beats writhing in pain for 20 minutes after having a sip of lukewarm water.

While I love nothing more than an afternoon shopping at Target I say go for B&N. I worked there throughout college & became a supervisor for a year after I graduated & (although this was over 10 years ago) they’re a good company to work for. Lots of benefits – like getting to borrow any hardcover book in the store for 2 weeks! So as long as you stick to hardcovers you won’t even need to spend your paycheck there.

I’d go for the book store, or… any of your local Halloween shops that are looking for part-time help for the next 6 weeks. It’s a temporary gig, but imagine dressing up in costume for work!

  • Cassie

I work at Target part-time. I do not have to wear pleated pants. In fact, the dress code is khaki colored pants and a solid red shirt of your choice. That is it. You can certainly style it up if you would like to. Good luck.

Holy crap. I feel like your twin. Not only have I been having horrifying toothaches (due to a dead/dying root. I had a root canal scheduled for yesterday and it could not be done because out of the 10+ shots the Dentist gave me to numb the tooth, that little bugger decided NOT to participate. I get to take yet another antibiotic and go back in at 7:30am on Friday to hopefully complete this job), I have also thought about getting a second job as a waitress. I’ve never done it before; however, I think that for a few hours a night and maybe some hours on the weekends, I might just be able to make enough cash to get my credit cards/student loans/mortgage down to respectable balances. The boyfriend is VERY fiscally responsible and makes about 3x the amount that I do. I don’t want him finding out about my debt; therefore, I must take action! Anyway, I’ve been popping pain pills for the past 1.5 weeks and I have approximately 2.5 days left of this personal H-E-Double hockey sticks…after this I will be looking into this waitress gig. Good luck!

Kanye TOTALLY deserves it. What an ass!!

  • Wow, I wish I had a supportive girlfriend to get me through school. I have been doing my Masters full-time for the past 3 years and working part-time, except for this past year when I have been working full-time (savings ran out boo). It would have been so great to have someone in my life to support me (financially and emotionally) through that. Trust me, when he’s done, it’s going to be such a great feeling and all your (collective) hard work is going to taste so sweet. For you to get a second job to help him get through school is truly amazing. Kudos to you. The Universe is racking up those karmic brownie points my friend. Have you thought about bartending? You’re so cute you’d get mad tips (just don’t tell the IRS ;)

  • TWAIN lover

It is hard to have two different jobs.

  • I too have to get a part time gig. It’s not such a bad idea. Extra money. Looking at all the stuff you are going to buy when you get said extra money.

Sorry about the tooth. Hope it gets taken care of quickly.

    BTW, Kanye sucks.

  • maggie

just a couple things a) i heart taylor – during her live performance right after i was waiting for her to start crying, or end it with “screw you kanye!” and b) i have been completely non-productive in the evenings lately watching bones marathons on tnt every single night – new season thursday!

    Heather-

My BF works for a software company in Austin that builds the software that powers ratings and reviews on website. ALL the major retailers use the software. The company is http://www.bazaarvoice.com(No need to comment on the name. Every joke has been taken). They hire Moderators to evaluate the reviews before they go live on a site to ensure that they are appropriate(relevent, no swears, etc.) You can work part time from the comforts of yo’ own bed’room(insert Velvet Jones imitation). Its a great gig if you’re looking for part time work. i’m happy to introduce you.

You know, I worked at starbucks for a while this last year – and while I won’t say its been my favorite job, there are some good benefits:

    - as many free calorie laden caffeine full drinks as you can guzzle in the back room

    - part timers get full health benefits and stock options

    - you can steal some things from the pastry case at the end of the day

    - ten pounds of pastry-stealing weight

    - good material for writing – like, seriously, I’ve never had so many crazies to write about

    - and flexible hours!

    - plus i kept my green apron when I quit :-)

I found that 3 Advil liquigels worked better than the vocodine… had the same hot flashes, then got cold. I couldn’t decide if I needed to strip down or roll up in a blaknet.

  • I bought her CD Fearless when it came out!!! it’s supe awsome…she’s still not my fave singer though :D
