the devil wears easy spirit (or, we just can’t get over the huaraches)

Heather: I had a really horrible dream the other night. I woke up in bed with a guy I didn’t want to sleep with (I have a foggy notion that it was Mark). I was panicked. We must have been drunk, because I couldn’t remember any of it happening and I didn’t know if we’d used a condom. It was terrifying.

Sarah: Oh no! I hate realistic bad dreams. They throw off your mood all day long.

Heather: Right? I woke up and sincerely thought I had to go find a morning after pill!

Sarah: Shudder. Imaginary bullet dodged.

Heather: I know. God. Can you imagine? Mark’s love child? Is there anything i want less?

Sarah: Hmmm…

Heather: Herpes maybe. Or huaraches.

Sarah: I would vote for huaraches.

Heather: The Rosemary’s Baby of footwear.

    Amen.

Though I’m not sure that’s appropriate in a post referencing the Devil.

    Is Devil capitalized?

Okay, clearly I’m not fit to know what’s appropriate here.

    What is a huruach?!?!

  • B.

what I love is that moment when you realise that it wasn’t real, it was just a dream. I always start laughing at that point.

  • H,

I had to see for myself just what Huarache sandals were, so I did a little internet search (thank you Al Gore). I found a lot of different styles. Do you hate them all with the same pasion or are some worse than others. The slide with a heel seems like the least offensive to me. The flats I saw……. BAAAAAADDDDD!!!! And the men’s Huaraches (excuse me while I vomit). I can see some guy with those sandals, khaki Bermuda shorts, a braided belt, and a floral print shirt (tucked in, of course). It’s not a pretty sight, and what’s really scary is that when I picture a woman with the flat huaraches, she’s wearing the same exact outfit.

  • Haha, I’ve also never seen huaraches before, did a little search and wish I hadn’t. Yuck! Had to go hold some strappy, slinky black heels just to recover…

My big footwear nightmare were the Dr. Scholls sandals with the big buckle and the hard wood sole. I used to hate them and of course when I was about 7 years old my mom bought me and her a matching pair. My mom wasn’t too happy when I came home one evening after playing outside without them :o

  • You know huarache sandals are all the rage this year?

I’m a big fan of huarache omelettes with a side of refried beans and some hot sauce.

But, seriously, on the subject of those very bad realistic dreams. Hate those. Have had that one myself — no, not having Mark’s lovechild, but knocking someone up (and once, it turned out NOT to be a dream, but that’s a story for another day). I’ve had the reverse, too … a realistic dream in which something decent happens. My favorite was in high school and I’d dreamt that I had 20 bucks (which is a good chunk for those days) and I woke up the next morning and my wallet was empty. I blamed my brother for stealing my 20 bucks and he thought I’d lost my mind. My most recent was I was just hanging out, chilling, talking to Mandy Moore, like we were old friends. But when I woke up, I remembered that Mandy Moore is not my friend and that she lost her virginity to Fez.

  • Almost forgot! Which sunglasses did you get?

I didn’t get any yet, but seriously thinking about the first VW ones.

  • I have a similar thing. I don’t understand how a guy can where black shoes and a black belt with blue jeans. People in the midwest tell me I’m crazy. I just don’t see how it looks good.

  • Stephanie

Is it the blue of the blue jeans that you think clashes with the black?

I love black! Black goes with everything.

  • jd

Yeah, Mike, I think you’re gonna have to go elsewhere for support on that one (says the guy suddenly insecure about his shoes and belt).

  • Stephanie

Aww JD don’t feel insecure about your shoes and belt. As long as your not wearing huaraches, I think your safe.

  • I once had a very vivid dream about breaking up with a guy I didn’t even know.

It was so real that I was literally heartbroken for a few days. It was really hard to shake it off.

Heather you sound like an out of touch loon. I feel as if I just wasted 60 seconds of my life reading this page.

I ran across your site by doing a Google search for huaraches. FYI, I’ve settled on these in the tan loafer style: http://tinyurl.com/kxjbg . I expect them to be comfortable during the heat of the summer, and to coordinate well with my khakis and Hawaiian print shirts. Maybe I’ll park them under your bed for a few hours….
