I’m never going to write about politics because, my god, don’t care. Not even a little. The country is going straight to hell, but I’ve got a bathroom drain that won’t unclog, a best good friend who makes boxed macaroni and cheese somehow very gourmet, a not always sane father to fret over and the world’s most obnoxious, delectable wonderment of a kitten to squelch, and all of that just seems to take up any space which would otherwise be dedicated to politics. Whatever, I still vote. Unless it cuts into kitten time.
I’m never going to write about current events or what’s going on with the media unless it’s exceptionally compelling (and by compelling, I mean salacious). And fashion? Unless it’s something really offensive (oh, yes, Crocs, I’m looking at you), I’ll leave it to the Fug girls. Because they know more about such things (shirring? smocking? So many terms to memorize! And we already covered the fact that my brain is busy with other things) and ultimately, we agree. Especially about formal shorts.
I’m never going to write about literature or science or sports or… what’s the green pie piece for on Trivial Pursuit? Whatever it is, I’m not going to write about that either. Economics, ecology, the environment. No, no, and unless it’s about polar bears drowning, probably not.
And so really, what that leaves me to write about is… me. What it’s like to be a very ordinary person on very ordinary days. What it’s like to know my friends and my family and have my sore nose. To see the things I see and to be possessed with sudden silly thoughts while riding the subway in the morning next to a man who smells like soap and pancakes. I mean, obviously, I should write more about my sisters. Because they are fascinating.
But maybe tomorrow. Mentioning so many things not about me has been thoroughly exhausting. I think I need to lie down.

Cheers!
A lot of times, I find that these feelings of being “part of something greater or bigger than myself” are just gas. Then I go back to hording Slim Jims from the snack closet. You heard me right. WE HAVE A SNACK CLOSET!!!
Bwahahahah! Oh Mike. Bless you.
Too cute-I’m 17 and have a Trivial Pursuit game in French from 1976! I have to skip the pink pieces!
I think the day-to-day stories are the most interesting. Though I’m sure your sisters are fascinating.
i think there are enough websites/blogs dealing with what you don’t discuss. it’s refreshing to just live vicariously through your day-to-day. so, for that, thanks.
Nice post- and good for you for using your energy on this post instead of using too much time dignifying a response to people who DON’T think you should be writing about you.
Are you feeling any better?
OOOOOOO Mike! Your making me hungry! What kind of snaks do you have in that closet of yours???
cp, you live vicariously through this post? you don’t wake up with your own aches and pains and your own colds now and then? interesting.
and fish, i never thought that you weren’t interesting enough and i’ve quite enjoyed some of your articles, but let’s be honest here, you must have opinions on things. you’re probably going nuts right now because i haven’t capitalized any of the words that should be, and you’ve had a post about that before. like i said, i’ve enjoyed your stuff.
i should have worded my earlier comment differently. and when i said that someone might have wished the cold on you, it was only because you stated it you wished it on everyone you hated, so it was just a thought that came to me.
anyhow…you don’t have to write about politics, enough of that is on the news, no? and you don’t have to write about style, not too interesting either, but i’m sure you have very strong opinions on certain things and i’d like to read about those as well as your aches and pains.
nope, i have no immune system whatsoever. the only way i can understand these feelings is by reading Fish’s postings on the sort. you got me.
“apology”…you seem the type even if she DID post an opinion on something, you would be the first to comment on why her opinion is wrong.
The everyday things are what makes most of us keep returning to read more…no matter what you are going thru at the time…you type it out so well…that’s what hooked me…
Hope you are feeling much better & that beast of a red ring at the base of your nose is going away if not already gone…
Can’t wait to hear about your sisters…
new material- you are an ass and you are rude. yes, people live vicariously thru her blog. her writing can pull out so many different emotions from you. people come here to check in on HER LIFE, even tho we don’t really know her- it’s like calling up a friend to see how they are doing. If you were at your friend’s house and they were sick would you say “wow, i really wish you would talk about politics or something”. well, you probably would. If you want to read about current events- buy a newspaper. She writes what she wants- obviously.
I enjoy reading about the everyday things that we all go through. But Fish has a way of wording things that brings out the humor, poignancy and humanity of all of us. We all get colds, and broken hearts and new shoes. Through Fish’s eyes and words, it’s special. Relating to this column connects us together. I’m a huge fan!
The snack closet, here in the office, is our CFO’s attempt to keep us fat and happy and at our desks working. It’s got everything from gum to granola to chocolate covered Oreo cookies. Basically, he sends his secretary to Costco once a month with a couple of grand and she comes back with a ton of junk food.
I love reading about other people’s lives! Especially Fish’s. I like keeping up with current events, thats why I read those blogs. I dont want you to change a thing about your blog!
Mike- you work for executives? I used to work for a CEO, CFO etc… thats all you do when you work for them is eat crap and gain 20 pounds! Those are the only perks I got working for them.
This is precisely why I come here! I don’t want to read about all those things you listed. If I did, I’d go somewhere else. I come here because I want to read about you.
Thanks Fish.
Mike,
Are ya’ll hiring and in the NYC metro? If not – even after the day I’ve had – I might even be willing to relocate. At this point, I’d do anything for a CEO that wants to keep me fat and happy.
Fish,
I think I’m getting sick too. It’s the worst. I really do hate it. I keep hearing that If I sleep, I’ll feel better.

I wanna go in the closet with you Mike. And no, I don’t want a snack, I have evil thoughts ;>
Fish, you are perfect the way you are. there are many of us that love what you write, no matter what it is. I’m sure your sisters are as interesting as you are.
Lots of love from SC, I hope you are feeling better!
Nothing should ever cut into kitten time. Or big fat former tomcat time. Or elderly female cat time. Or stick your face into cat tummy time.
I would like to read your opinions too. What is your opinion of anonymous people who tell you what to write about?
People assume because you don’t write about something that you simply have no thoughts about it. I like things here the way they are. Everyone can write about the book they’re reading, not everyone can write about you. (Well, they could but not as well.)
Wow – so that licking your face thing really worked, eh? As to the mac & cheese thing, it’s the crystal bits and diamonds I sprinkled in. Adore you my friend. Always.
Mike,
anyone depressed about their weight in your office? Cos they could sue your boss for encouraging over calorizing…
…?
I’m not trying to be political here (rather cultural and societal) but I think in our individualized culture, we sometimes forget how we are all linked by common things. And maybe we don’t read literature as much anymore but I think this is doing what literature is always purported to do at its best – highlight the human condition. So many people comment with “Yes! That is happening to me too!” It’s obvious that this is a touchstone for them (us) to find that we are common – not in the drab way but rather in the universal way; that we are all connected. I saw the winner of the Nobel prize for literature on TV last night and he said much the same thing: literature is for showing that, down at the individual level, we are much more alike than different. Fish highlights our commonality, which resonates as Togetherness. We are Together in this. I wish you many more posts of great success.
