Where’ve I been?
Well, I’ve been here, mostly. Camped out on my sofa, nursing a bit of a sore throat (if I’m lucky, it’s the mumps) and making some April vacation plans.
This weekend, though, I did get out a bit. On Sunday, I took full advantage of the sunshine. And then later, of a few bucks from my tax return to go shopping with Sarah. But even shopping, I wasn’t, shall we say, bringing my A-game. *Shudder*. I started out in fine shape, eyeing a pair of sex-in-red-leather Calvin Klein sandals, but ended bringing home a new bathrobe, a dvd and the third installment of the Traveling Pants series.
What? I’m fine.
It just seems that when I get the blues, I get the director’s cut. Way too long and drawn out. I’m sure I’ll be feeling red leather again in no time. But right now? I’m pale pink terrycloth.
Incidentally, while I was having a quickie with those shoes, Sarah made a horrifying discovery: They still make huarache sandals. If they’re still making them, that means people (other than my mother) are still wearing them. On purpose.
I know. I’m as upset as you are.
Before I go seek solace with my book, I want to say thanks to Alyce from New Mexico for the most excellent surprise. I don’t even remember adding it to my wish list, but it’s the most perfect pick-me-up gift. And so well-timed in it Jane Austen-y-ness. Thank you.
Oh dear God, are you serious? I must have had those suckers in every color, 20 years ago. Yikes!
I still get nightmares knowing they still make jellies out there for young, unsuspecting girls to wear. They must be outlawed: it stunts their fashion growth!
Not having grown up in North America I’m always excited to add some new references to my bag of cultural curiosities. Thanks for my addition of the day – Huarache Sandals – never even heard of them before. A quick web search revealed that Cole Haan (best walking shoes ever)has “Huarache Sandals” in its newest collection – they have a 3.25 inch heel and come in red. I have to admit I’m not even remotely repulsed.

Those are not at all the huaraches we remember from our early teens.
Sad but true, huaraches are slightly fashionable again. That and tapered leg jeans. Oh God I think I will have permanent retina damage if I see someone rocking them both at the same time. Something tells me it’ll be Sienna Miller.
Anyway, sweetie, you feel free to wallow – it always passes.
“Sense and Sensibility” is a WONDERFUL film. If you haven’t seen it yet, settle in when you’re not rushed and turn your phone off – it’s a treat. One of my “comfort” movies, in fact.
Huaraches are back?! Loved ‘em back in the day, but now I’m a bit repulsed.
This is what we remember, right?

*shiver*
wow Joyce B, those made me vomit a bit.
let me know how the third Sisterhood/Pants book is, I haven’t had any time to buy or read it.
I just finished it! (quick read, I guess) It was great! Not so many teary moments like the first two (or maybe I just identified with some of those angsty moments better), but it was perfect, just the same.
Fish, we all have those moments where were prefer our comfy PJ’s over our man hunting clubbing outfit, but if you find your self starting to crave the huarache sandals….just step away and call a therapist ASAP!
Hope you feel better soon:)
I made the same discovery a few weeks back.
It seems…as another one of your readers so rightly noted…they are back “in style” or “in fashion”.
That said, I do know one place they will not be…”in my possession!”
I loved my huaraches! They came from Mexico and the soles were made out of recycled tires. Although the leather made a funny creaking sound when I walked.
The air, is filled, with *spices*!
Swoon…
Babe – I think you need to narrow your focus to more of a J. Crew flip flop intervention. And the best part, it’d be sooo conveniently located! :p
it took me a while to figure out what huaraches were, and when i did a google image search on them, all i got were nike sneakers.
hmmm, i guess i never got into them, so even the jelly ones from our collective childhoods were beyond my grasp!
but i also don’t understand the “gladiator” look, either. or maybe i just don’t understand fads….i’m a J. Crew flip flop girl myself! should i have an intervention?
A lurker here that just had to come out and share her disgust over the huarache comeback. I couldn’t remember exactly what they were, but when I did a search for them and found a pair available on sears.com, a year of perpetually bad hair days and painful lunches in the school cafeteria came flooding back into my memory. Why would I ever want to relive my awkward years by slipping those leather spider webs on my feet???
where do you keep your wishlist that allows your friends to buy you little surprises!?! What a great idea. I could use one!
Glad to hear you’re ok, Fish! I was worried for you, as I completely can relate to the whole, “nothing is wrong, something must go wrong” mentality.
And weighing in on the hurache/jelly sandals discussion:
I remember vividly at 6 years old saving up my allowance to buy a pair of red jelly shoes from the center-aisle bin at Kmart. Prancing about the playground wearing those in the Florida heat just made those suckers little sieves of stinky foot mud. Ewwww…. Now I can see why my parents, who usually provided me with all of my footwear, forced me to save up and buy those petri dishes on my own…. *shudder*
I loved my jellies. I think I had them in every color and was sad when I outgrew them. I do not think that it stunted my fashion sense. I do have the presense of mind not to buy into the huarache comeback. I, too, am thinking about what I am going to spend my tax refund on, the trifle amount that it is. I think these…http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/9298071/c/36310.html
Gee, my tax refund will be spent on a lawn mower (homeownership DISCOS!), but if those are the shoes “in style” this year? I’d rather have the mower. Although likely we won’t see the “fashionable comeback” for two more years. We’re behind up in the midwest….
Indulging your pink terrycloth side is rejuvenating.
Yea, I noticed that huaraches were back in style this season. Haven’t seen them until this spring. Oi vey.
There is a guy (oh yes, it’s true!) that I work with that is currently wearing them. It’s scary! Those (along with big hair) should stay a distant memory. Really.
