Today, Loolwa Khazzoom from About.com interviewed me about blogging. You can read it here (or here, if the other isn’t current).
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have more of my most treasured possessions to pack into flimsy cardboard boxes that I just know the movers will treat with the utmost care.
Sigh. T-minus nineteen hours.
UPDATE: The movers just left. And while they weren’t exactly the most graceful dudes to handle a box of wine glasses, they managed to complete the move $600 under their estimate. Six hundred dollars.
Worst comes to worst, I’ll buy new damn wine glasses.
Hi H:
Good luck with your upcoming move – sounds like the beginning of a new adventure.
(By the way – I’m no longer at Mindscapes but at the URL I’ve given here.)
With much luck blown your way in a butterfly kiss across continents…
So this blogging thing… can you make friends through it? Thank goodness you’ll still be whoring it for ivillage – I’ll need it to keep you under close supervision all the way in TX.
BTW – my mom says to tell you, you better come visit, she’ll miss you in CT and at Thanksgiving. She’s come to think of you as the daughter she never had (the tall one who is sweet to her and never makes fun of her over application of Estee Lauder).
You are doing a good/brave thing. Everything is hard, you will be fine. Really, what is easy in life other than vegging on the couch? I know of which I speak – I left NYC for LA some years ago – so hard, but had to be done. Not saying that I am not planning/plotting my return…But change is good. Different is good and is needed to provide clarity. Stirs things up.
Also – plastic grocery bags wadded up make excellent cheap packing for fragile things.
It will be fine – and fun.
You’re moving out of New York the same day I’m moving in. I feel your cardboard box pain, though happily, I’m moving some place furnished, and only temporarily, so only a small fraction of my possessions are currently being packed away. Speaking of which… I should probably finish packing.
Wow, good luck with everything! I’m sure your stuff will be fine- though I would freak a little, too.
I’d still love to know how you were able to do this. Maybe you’re still figuring some of it out as you go? I’m just really looking for the motivation to up and go right now but I have no idea where to begin. Just what you’ve shared here, though, has got my wheels turning.
I can’t wait to read the stories of your life in Texas.
Here’s to your safe travels. May your iPod play all the right songs and may Hal not be singled out for a cavity search.
Good luck with the move!
Aww, Fish – - you’re still not here? You’re missing all of the golf-ball sized hail, heavy lightning, flash floods and a lovely tornado or two!
Texas appears to be gearing up to welcome you home!
good luck lady! it’ll be fantastic soon enough. thanks for blogging.
Good luck with the move! My best friend/cousin is making the move over to Texas as well, she says it’s beautiful there. I’ll have to make a trip and see it for myself! =)
I’ve moved about four times in the past 3 and a half years…I hate the process, but the best part is unpacking and ‘starting over’ in a way. It’ll be a good change.
Saw Patti Smith last night for a listening party. She said from NYC she’ll be ‘tramping’ around Europe to promote her new album and bring back her “discoveries”. Consider yourself ‘tramping’ around the Lone Star State. You’ll be back.
Congrat’s on another great write-up! You’re encouragement to bloggers everywhere (new and old) is appreciated!
As far as your move, its also very encouraging for me for the times I feel like I want to go running away from the streets of NYC. I never feel like I have the courage necessary to up-and-move, but following your tale gives me a little hope that one day I can be just as adventurous! Enjoy the extended vacation!
H.
What a great read your blog has been for me the last 2 weeks! (Yes … I just found it 2 weeks ago and I read it from beginning to the present.) It’s great to see how far you have come in the last few years. Excellent writing and your style resonates sweetly in my brain for some silly reason.
I definitely wish you the best on your move! Take care of Sir Hal … I’ll be worrying about him till you get him safely to his new home (as I know you will too)!
- Tami (aka MarineMom online), definitely a new fan of HLH!
Ah, the cycle of life. You are leaving New York and I am moving to it. Find anyone for your apartment yet?
I hope you feel as scared and as brave as I do. What good would life be without extreme changes that build character?
Don’t worry. I’ll look after NYC while you’re gone.
Good luck, safe travels, and the article/interview was really good, I enjoyed reading it.
Let me know how the cabs are in Dallas. Say Hi to JR, Bobby, and Sue Ellen for me.
DOOOOON’T GOOOOOOOOO!
I can change, baby. Really I can. You don’t have to go through with this. There’s still time!
Have a safe trip.
Take a deep breath and go for it. I can’t wait to read about your new Texas-sized adventures!
Awesome article Heather! Thanks for the blog insight and good luck with the move.
Thanks for sharing your interview. Always inspiring to see people getting paid to do what they love.
Good luck packing – Don’t for get the hand lotion or EVOO. Cardboard can be so drying.
It was great to hear how your blog came about. Good luck with the move!
New wine glasses are fun anyway!
a little belated on the latest at your site- but I just read about your move to TX.
This year I moved from NY to CA (7+ yrs in NY). It was such a bitter/ sweet experience no one will ever understand unless they have done it themselves.
Everyone in TX will ask you if NY is JUST like Friends or Sex in the City.
You will be amazed at the amazing weather every single day you wake up and won’t get over how much sky there is.
Life will be so easy, but bland. I miss the culture and food and people that are really far away from me now. My move is for good, so perhaps the pangs of sorrow stem from that. But generally, it feels like I broke up with a boyfriend that treated me right, just needed a lot of attention.
I never realized exactly how ‘hard’ it was to live there until I wasn’t there anymore. And then I gave myself a high five for sticking it out as long as I did, which was the timing that we needed for our family and lives.
It will be fun to read about your transition.
I agree with Carmen on the wine glasses. Plus now your friends will know what to get you as a housewarming gift.
I loved reading your interview (though I’m a bit jealous of your success, no matter how well deserved).
At one time I did a bright thing and sent wine bottles from Italy back to NYC in unpadded boxes. I must’ve been sampling their vino when I thought that one up. The wheel of cheese at the duty-free shop is a better bet. Cheers.
oh Fish! I’m so excited that you are coming to Dallas! It’s a GREAT city and we love it so! Even my hubby, who’s from Conneticut, has grown to really love it.
I remember the good byes and the questions surrounding a move… but knowing what you do is for you and your future is the best feeling in the world.
GOOD LUCK!! and if you need a few restaraunt recommendations, we can certainly make a few!
I’m sad. You’re gone.
Bye…
Will you change the look of your site to reflect the new look of your life?
$600 will get you a LOT of very nice wine glasses
I believe the correct phrase is “if worse comes to worst” or “if worse comes to worse” …because in both situations you’re taking crap and making it crappier. “Worst” coming to “worst” wouldn’t necessarily be so bad, as long as you don’t mind status quo.
Yeah, I’m a dork.
Good luck with the move!
Seriously?? $600 under their estimate?? Those very same movers moved me from the upper west side down to gramercy park and came in probably about $500-600 OVER the estimate they’d given me. I’m impressed. What’s your secret?
